Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology is a private deemed-to-be-university located[2] in a rural part of South India accredited by NAAC. The university headquarters is in the town of Vallam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India. It was earlier named "Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women". The campus sprawls in 216 acres of land and it is situated 45 km East of Tiruchirapalli and 10 km West of Thanjavur

History[]

In the year 1988, Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women was started with the aim of providing quality higher education in the field of Engineering and Technology by Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Trust managed by K.Veeramani, leader of Dravidar Kazhagam. The college was named after social reformer "Periyar" E. V. Ramasamy. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the academic programs and the college was affiliated with Bharathidasan University. As per the guidelines from the Government of Tamil Nadu, the affiliation of college was changed to Anna University in the year 2001. As process of reaching out the unreached, the college was upgraded as Deemed to be University by University Grants Commission from the year 2007 and renamed as Periyar Maniammai University (Deemed to be University). The admission was open to both boys and girls students and follow University Education system. Further, as per the instructions from the UGC, it is now named as Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology.
