"Pick a Bale o' Cotton" is a work song from the repertoire of Lead Belly.[3]

Johnny Cash released his adaptation[4] as a single for Columbia Records (Columbia 4-42512, with "Bonanza!" on the flip side)[3][5][6] in July[7][8] or August 1962.[5]

The Billboard magazine evaluated the single upon its release as having a "moderate sales potential",[2] but "Bonanza" only grazed the Hot 100 and entirely missed the Billboard country chart,[4] while "Pick a Bale o' Cotton" didn't make either.

Background[]

"Pick a Bale O'Cotton" is a simple, repetitious song that Cash wrote on the subject of cotton. The carefree lyric "Jump down, turn around, pick a bale o' cotton," tries to put a positive spin on the grueling, merciless work of the cotton farmer. It might have been sung out in the fields as the cotton was being gathered to help alleviate the backbreaking boredom that would set in daily. The song was not released at the time.[when?]
