The Poetry Society of Indiana is a non-profit state-level poetry association in the U.S. state of Indiana, which is affiliated with the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS). The organization promotes poetry, conducts monthly meetings and annual contests, publishes poetry books and organizes periodic workshops and festivals.
History[]
Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs was first envisioned by June Winona Snyder of Indianapolis, and established on May 31, 1941, including 25 charter members, at the Marott Hotel in Indianapolis. The society was incorporated as a non-profit in 1980 as the Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs. In 2016 the group changed its name to Poetry Society of Indiana and extended its to membership outreach throughout the state.[1] The society currently has five affiliated chapters.
In 1978 the organization inaugurated the annual fall poetry contest, which includes up to 25 sponsored contests annually. PSI published its first newsletter bulletin Indiana Poet on August 1, 1942. The archives for the organization are stored at Purdue University.[2]
Activities[]
The Poet's Society of Indiana sponsors the Fall Rendezvous festival with a round of poetry contests, and remains active in the Manningham Trust student poetry contest. The society arranges for member publications and organizes meetings and events. Since 1945 PSI has also nominated an unofficial state's Poet Laureate with varying terms of office.[3]
PSI publishes the Indiana Poet newsletter six times a year, including poetry, publication information, contests, activities and news from affiliated clubs. PSI also publishes an annual print anthology of the winners of its poetry contest, titled Ink to Paper, and in 2017 it released a 75th-anniversary collection and history, called Diamonds.[4]
