The Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP), which has operated under the name Public Health Ontario since 2011,[1] was established in 2008 by the .[2] The OAHPP is an agent of the Crown (i.e. a Crown agency) and is considered an arm's-length government agency.

The OAHPP began operations in July 2008 with a mandate to provide scientific and technical advice to those working to protect and promote the health of Ontario residents. Its objectives include establishing, operating and maintaining laboratory centers, providing laboratory services, and operating Ontario public health laboratories previously operated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.[3]

As of December 15, 2008, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced that all employees, programs and functions of the Ontario Public Health Laboratories (OPHL) had been transferred to the OAHPP.[4] In early June 2011, the OAHPP announced that it would operate under the name Public Health Ontario beginning on June 11, 2011.[5]

The Act should be read alongside the (RSO 1990, c H.7), section 81(1) of which empowers the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario to "appoint a Chief Medical Officer of Health on the address of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario."[6] As of June 2021, the incumbent CMOH of Ontario is Dr Kieran Moore, who worked his way up through the ranks in the region.[7]
