Purbasthali Uttar (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is an assembly constituency in Purba Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Overview[]

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, Purbasthali and Nadanghat constituencies ceased to exist and in its place Purbasthali now has two assembly constituencies. No. 268 Purbasthali Dakshin (Vidhan Sabha constituency) covers Nandai, Kankuria, Begpur, Atghoria Simlan, Dhatrigram and Sultanpur gram panchayats of Kalna I community development block and Nasratpur, Samudragarh, Nagpur, Sreerampur and Nadanghat gram panchayats of Purbasthali I community development block. No. 269 Purbasthali Uttar (Vidhan Sabha constituency) covers Purbasthali II community development block, Jahannagar and Dogachia gram panchayats of Purbasthali I CD Block, and Bamunpara, Mamudpur II and Putsuri gram panchayats of Manteswar CD Block.[1]

The Purbasthali assembly segment was earlier part of Katwa (Lok Sabha constituency). As per orders of Delimitation Commission both Purbasthali Dakshin and Purbasthali Uttar are part of No. 38 Bardhaman Purba (Lok Sabha constituency).[1]

The West Bengal political scenario has changed dramatically over the years. In the early years after independence it was a scene of fluctuating fortunes between the Congress and the Left wing parties, till the latter captured power in the late seventies. The United News of India in a candid analysis says, “The green surge swept Bengal to demolish the red bastion in 2011 Assembly elections… Moreover, as the Left still remained cornered in state politics, their neutralised voters are increasingly migrating to the BJP for a viable alternative.”[2]
