Queen Daemok of the Hwangju Hwangbo clan (Korean: 대목왕후 황보씨; Hanja: 大穆王后 皇甫氏) or known as Queen Taemok (Korean: 태목왕후; Hanja: 太穆王后) was a Goryeo Royal Princess as the only daughter of King Taejo and Queen Sinjeong,[5] also the full younger sister of King Daejong[6] who became a Queen Consort through her marriage with her half older brother, King Gwangjong as his first and primary wife.[7] She was the mother of his successor, King Gyeongjong and paternal aunt of his successor-in-throne, King Seongjong. From this marriage, Queen Daemok became the first reigned Goryeo queen who followed her maternal clan, that later commonly used to other queen consorts.[7]
Her marriage with Gwangjong was believed after 937 but before 943. She was best known for included in the law of slaves' emancipation (노비안검법, 奴婢按檢法)'s in 956 which enacted by Gwangjong to correct the slavery's evils as slaves often despised and betrayed their masters.[8] While knowing this, she was said to strongly opposed this with begged him earnestly, but Gwangjong ignored and rejected her pleas, instead keep enacted the emancipation.[9] The Queen's opposition to her husband's implementation represented the interests of the nobles and Hwangju Hwangbo clan still remained behind her. However, in Gwangjong's eyes, her maternal family was only one of the nobles to be removed. She then enshrined in her husband's shrine and buried in Heolleung along with him.
Although her dates are unknown, it seems that the Queen was born in the early 930s and died after 975 but before 1002 when King Mokjong (her only grandson) gave her a posthumous name.
Posthumous name[]
- In April 1002 (5th year reign of King Mokjong), name An-jeong (안정, 安靜) was added.
- In March 1014 (5th year reign of King Hyeonjong), name Seon-myeong (선명, 宣明) was added.
- In April 1027 (18th year reign of King Hyeonjong), name Ui-jeong (의정, 懿正) and Sin-gyeong (신경, 信敬) was added.
- In October 1056 (10th year reign of King Munjong), name Gong-pyeong (공평, 恭平) was added.
- In October 1253 (40th year reign of King Gojong), name Jeong-ye (정예, 靜睿) was added to her Posthumous name too.
