Rainych Ran (/rɛɪnɪ rɑːn/ REIN-itch RAHN; born October 20, 1992 in Sumatra, Indonesia),[2][3][4] known mononymously as Rainych (/rɛɪnɪ/ REIN-itch) is an Indonesian singer and YouTuber.[5][6] She gained global popularity for her renditions of various of Japanese language songs, crossing from anime to the vocaloid songs. Also best known for her covers of various city pop and J-pop songs, including "Mayonaka no Door" and "Plastic Love."[7][8] She has also made Japanese covers of English songs like "Say So" and "Blinding Lights," which have been praised by both their original singers, Doja Cat and The Weeknd respectively.[5]

Early life[]

Ran started singing when she was in elementary school and was interested in anime and manga when she was a teenager.[9] She learned about Vocaloid because of the community.[10]

Career[]

2015–2018: Early career[]

Ran had various life problems and was depressed until the end of 2015, but started her YouTube channel on May 26, 2015 after remembering the anime songs she used to listen to.[11] Although she didn't have any knowledge of Japanese, she posted her first Japanese cover on August 15, 2016, recorded in her bedroom.[12] Prior to gaining attention as a YouTuber, she taught robotics at a vocational school.[13] Until the end of 2018, her YouTube channel only reached about 9,000 subscribers, but Ran still expressed her happiness by thanking the fans that supported on her Facebook page.[14]

2019–2020: Rise to prominence[]

Ran found showing herself on video to be a daunting task. But after telling herself that only 1,000 or so people would view the uploads, she released a rendition of the a theme song to the anime “Dororo” with a clip of herself in early 2019.[9] Her cover of hit songs, such as "Lemon" and "Gurenge" archived million views, also her rendition of "Omae wa Mou" became a hit.[‡ 1][‡ 2][‡ 3] On November 18, 2019 (JST), via her indie label Sprite:Wall, she released her first single for global market, a Japanese-English song entitled "Time-Lapse".[15][16]

In March, 2020, Ran released a Japanese cover version of Doja Cat's single "Say So" in a style reminiscent of 80's city pop.[13][17] Translated by fellow YouTuber Datenkou, the video became viral and gained the attention of Doja Cat while on an Instagram livestream after a fan suggested that she listen to her cover.[18] Doja Cat praised Ran during her listen, calling her voice "beautiful."[19][20] Ran expressed her happiness and gratitude on Twitter, thanking the fan that suggested the song.[21][22] Her cover of "Plastic Love" also attracts attention.[23] On August 23, 2020, she appeared on the NHK-BS program Cool Japan ~Hakkutsu! Kakkoī Nippon~, where she performed her cover of "Mayonaka no Door."[24] In August, she also posted a Japanese cover of The Weeknd's song "Blinding Lights," which earned praise from The Weeknd himself on his SNS.[25][26][27]
