Ramli bin Mohd Nor (Jawi: رملي بن محمد نور; born 1 October 1958) is a Malaysian politician. He is currently the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cameron Highlands since 2019. He also serves in the government as chair of Amanah Raya Berhad (ARB).[1] He is a member of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

Background[]

Ramli Mohd Nor was born at Batu 12 Orang Asli Settlement, Jalan Pahang, Gombak, Selangor in 1958. Ramli's father was a native of Peninsular Malaysia from the Semai tribe, Cameron Highland, Pahang. His mother is from the Temiar tribe from Gua Musang, Kelantan.[2]

Ramli is a retired senior police officer in Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) with the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).[3][4]

Political career[]

In January 2019, Ramli first contested in Cameron Highlands by-election to become an MP after he was picked as candidate being the BN's direct member.[5] The election was held after the Election Court on 30 November 2018 declared the incumbent BN's MP of Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), Sivarraajh Chandran's victory in the seat null and void because it was found that corrupt practices were committed in the 2018 general election (G14).[6]

He won the by-election after defeating M. Manogaran of Democratic Action Party (DAP) from Pakatan Harapan (PH) and two other Independent candidates, Wong Seng Yee and Sallehudin Ab Talib, with a 3,238 majority.[7]

He is the first indigenous Orang Asli candidate elected an MP into the Dewan Rakyat.[8] Ramli had later joins UMNO as its member.[9][10]
