Ravi Gaikwad is the chief of RTO, Thane and the Konkan region. He is also the chief of the Road Safety Cell in Maharashtra.[1] He serves as the chairman of the Handball Federation of India, a member of International Handball Federation.[2][3] He is also on the board of Indian Olympic Association and All India Football Federation and is also the Chairman of Shant Bharat Surakshit Bharat.[4] Gaikwad is also the President of Uttarakhand Football Federation.[5]

Biography[]

Early life and education[]

Gaikwad was born in Pune to Pushpa and Kisanrao Gaikwad. His father is a retired Senior Bureaucrat in the Government of Maharashtra and his mother is a director of a financial institution. His father completed his Civil Engineering (BE Civil) from Government College of Engineering, Karad and his mother completed BA (Political Science Hons) from Pune University. Mr Ravi Gaikwad is also the grandson of first communist MLA of India and leader of Independence Movement Shree Bhaskarrao Tukaram Auti and nephew of current Deputy Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Mr Vijay Auti. He completed his early education at Little Flower Convent High School and later received his Engineering Degree in Electronics and Telecommunications as a Gold Medallist across all universities in the state of Maharashtra.[6] He was an HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate Examinations) Topper in Maharashtra State.[7]He has completed his PhD in the field of Engineering in Electronics & Telecommunications discipline. He holds a degree in Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Engineering and also holds a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree in the field of sports. He worked as a scientist. He has represented in Under 15, Under 17, and Under 19 categories and was selected in the Ranji Trophy Camp[8] of Maharashtra.[9] He cleared Civil Services and joined the Government.[10]

Career[]

Gaikwad worked as the head regional transport officer of the Andheri RTO. In 2009, he was accused in controversies related to registration of imported bikes. (Ultimately he was exonerated of all charges).[11] Subsequently he was transferred to Beed but he did not join the office there. In 2015, Gaikwad was appointed as the deputy regional transport officer. He also held the office of Borivali Regional Transport Office, Mumbai as the Chief. Currently he is the head of RTO Thane and Konkan.[1]

In 2016, Gaikwad supervised the largest road safety class in Mumbai and set a Guinness World Record.[12] The event was organized by Borivali DRTO.

In February 2016, he set the Guinness World Record for organizing the largest handball lesson, which was attended by 678 people in Solapur, Maharashtra.[13]

In 2018, Gaikwad organized the 'Horn Not Ok' campaign to increase road safety awareness. The drive was attended by Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan.[1]

During the coronavirus lockdown, in May 2020, Gaikwad saw action against illegal transport of migrants with them issuing 250 memos to such vehicles.[14]

In January 2020, Maharashtra Chief Minister Shree Udhav Thackeray awarded Gaikwad the "Road Safety Award of Maharashtra" for his contribution towards road safety in reducing the number of accidents and deaths on Indian roads.[15]

Ravi Gaikwad is the founder of the Road Safety World Series that integrates the concept of Road Safety with sports to create awareness about the importance of road safety to save lives on Indian roads and roads across the globe.[20][21]He has been working to put together a league, with the involvement of top stars, from around the world to support the cause of road safety.[22]

The Road Safety World Series, the T20 cricket event played between legends of India, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka, was conceptualized towards creating awareness for the cause.[23][24]

Service and Philanthropy[]

Shant Bharat Surakshit Bharat[]

Ravi Gaikwad is the chairman of "Shant Bharat Surakshit Bharat" a trust which is involved with full dedication in service to the society. He has been doing lot of philanthropic work in India and has played a pioneering role in changing traditional ideas of charity.[25] His work is multi-faceted in nature and promotes social welfare, while placing considerable importance on national development.[26] He works with an aim to inspire social change in the country in terms of people's attitude towards behaviour on the roads regarding driving, riding, or even walking.[27]

  • Gaikwad has been awarded the Best Engineer Award by the Engineering Association of India (EAI).[30]
  • He has received two Gold Medals in Engineering[31]
  • He also received a Guinness World Record for the largest handball class conducted to encourage the playing of handball in India.[32]
  • Gaikwad received the Road Safety Award of Maharashtra for spreading awareness and in turn reducing the number of deaths and road accidents in the state.[33]
  • Gaikwad has been awarded "Life time World Peace Ambassador" by Wockhardt Foundation TWPM for his achievements and great service to humanity and his commitment to the cause.[17][34]
  • Gaikwad has been awarded " Man of Excellence Award " 2020, India's Most Coveted Award in recognition of outstanding professional  achievement and contribution in Nation Building by Indian Achievers' Forum.[18][34]
  • Gaikwad has been felicitated with CSR TIMES AWARD 2020 for educating people on road safety,promotion of sports and his contribution to the society regarding social welfare.[35]
  • Mr Gaikwad has been honoured with NELSON MANDELA HUMANITARIAN AWARD in the field of social welfare.[36][37][38]
  • Mr. Gaikwad has been awarded with MID DAY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in Social Welfare.[39][40]
  • Mr Gaikwad has been conferred with the HUMANITARIAN ACTIVIST INFLUENCER AWARD for his philanthropic work and humanitarian service.[36][41][42]
  • In May 2021, Gaikwad has been honoured with INDIA CORONA AWARD by Wockhardt Foundation.[43] In the same year he has also been honoured with COVID FIGHTERS AWARD by Government of Maharashtra.[44]
  • Ravi Gaikwad has been awarded with "CNBC Lifetime Achievement Award" under Sports Category in the year 2022[45]

Personal life[]

Ravi Gaikwad is married with Dr Nirmala who is a practicing physician and they have two kids, Ananya and Rishi. His younger sister Dr Pratibha is a practicing surgeon in the United Kingdom and his younger brother Pradeep is an Engineer.[19]
