Reem Ebrahim Al-Hashimi (Arabic: ريم إبراهيم الهاشمي; born 1978) is an Emirati Minister of State for International Cooperation and the Managing Director for Expo 2020.

Early life and education[]

Al Hashimi was born in 1978 in Dubai.[1][2] She earned a BA in International Relations and French from Tufts University. In 2002 she received a Master's degree from Harvard University.[3]

Political career[]

Reem Al-Hashimi heads Dubai Cares, a children's charity created by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum in 2007. She chairs the Emirates Competitiveness Council and the National Bureau of Statistics. She was formerly the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United Arab Emirates' embassy in Washington, DC.[4][5][6]

In September 2018, she contributed to a Vogue Arabia opinion article, discussing the importance of empowering women and children, the power of health and education in driving global development, and the UAE’s efforts in these domains.[6]

Expo 2020 Director General[]

As the Director-General for Expo 2020, Al Hashimi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UAE Gender Balance Council to highlight the UAE’s efforts in the domain of gender equality.[7] She also ordered the creation of the Women’s Pavilion to highlight women’s role in society and the development movement.[8]

For the Expo 2020, Al Hashimi asked oscar and Grammy-winning musician AR Rahman to form an all-women orchestra and which included members from around the region. The ensemble, named Firdaus Orchestra, included 50 women from 23 nationalities.[9][10]

Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates[]

Al Hashimi became a member of the United Arab Emirates cabinet as a Minister of State in February 2008.[11] In February 2016, she was appointed as Minister of State for International Cooperation.[12] She joined the Federal Government in 2008 as Minister of State. She has been involved in the UAE's bid to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai.[13]

Since her appointment, she has managed the International Affairs Office of the UAE Prime Minister, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Additionally, she holds responsibility within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the UAE’s bilateral relations with India, Pakistan, Sub-Saharan African countries and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS).[14]

On 10 September 2021, Al Hashimi participated in the High-level Humanitarian Event on Anticipatory Action: A Commitment to Act Ahead of Crises, hosted by the UK, Germany, and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to urge acting ahead of crises.[15]

In February 2021, Al Hashimi took part in a meeting of foreign ministers and senior officials from several Gulf countries in Athens, as Greece sought to expand alliances to reduce tension with Turkey.[16]

In June 2020, she read the UAE’s statement during a pledging conference to raise $2.4 billion to support Yemen in containing the spread of the coronavirus.[17][18]
