The Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (Galaxy S20 FE) is an Android-based smartphone designed, developed, marketed and manufactured by Samsung Electronics as part of its Galaxy S series. It was announced at Samsung's Unpacked Event on 23 September 2020 as a less expensive variant of the main S20 series.[2][3][4]

The phone was released globally on 2 October 2020, with a launch price of US$699.

Design[]

The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has a similar design to the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Samsung Galaxy Note 20, with an Infinity-O display containing a circular punch-hole in the top centre for the front selfie camera. The rear camera array is located in the corner with a rectangular protrusion housing three cameras. The frame uses anodized aluminium, and the back is made of Samsung's 'Glasstic', plastic that's designed to look and feel more like premium glass.[5] The S20 FE has a wide variety of colour options, including Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy, Cloud White, Cloud Red and Cloud Orange.[6]

Specifications[]

Hardware[]

Chipsets[]

The S20 Fan Edition has two systems-on-chip, the Exynos 990 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. The Exynos 990 was used only for the 4G model, and the Snapdragon 865 is used for both 4G and 5G models.

Display[]

The S20 Fan Edition features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with support and "dynamic tone mapping" technology. Compared to the other S20 models, the display is not curved but flat with rounded corners, and the resolution is 1080p instead of 1440p.[7] It has a 20:9 aspect ratio, as well as a 120 Hz refresh rate. It utilizes an in-screen fingerprint sensor, although it is optical rather than ultrasonic.

Storage[]

The S20 Fan Edition has 6 or 8 GB of RAM, paired with 128, 256 or 512 GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 1 TB via the microSD card slot.

Battery[]

The S20 Fan Edition contains a non-removable 4500 mAh, Li-Po battery, and Qi inductive charging is supported at up to 15 W as well as the ability to charge other Qi-compatible devices from the S20 FE's own battery power, which is branded as Samsung PowerShare. Fast charging is supported over USB-C at up to 25 W.

Connectivity[]

The S20 Fan Edition comes with 5G standard connectivity, though some regions may have special LTE variants. The device does not include a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Cameras[]

The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has a triple camera setup similar to the S20's, with an identical 12-megapixel wide sensor. The ultrawide sensor is 12-megapixels, and the telephoto sensor is 8-megapixels, with 3X optical zoom and 30X digital zoom (branded as "Space Zoom"). Unlike other S20 models, the S20 FE does not support 8K video shooting.

The front camera is 32-megapixels, and is able to record video at 4K resolution.

The camera also offers Single Take, which allows users to capture photos or videos at the same time with different sensors automatically.

Software[]

The S20 Fan Edition runs on Android 10 and Samsung's custom skin One UI 2.5. In February 2021, Android 11 with the One UI 3.1 update began rolling out.[8] The device will receive two more major updates according to Samsung's announcement.

Issues[]

Some users reported instances of the FE suffering from touchscreen issues such as "ghost" touches and jittery movement when scrolling or zooming. Samsung attempted to fix the issue with several updates.[9]

Moreover, some users reported annoyance due to the circumstance that the FE phone does not have the headset jack plug (the common four-conductor TRRS stereo-plus-mic 3.5mm jack socket found in the vast majority of phones produced since 2006), which can cause issues to people who do not want to use Bluetooth headsets (e.g. because of limitations intrinsic in wireless devices) or the uncommon USB-C headphones.[10]
