Sandhurst School is a secondary school in Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.[1] Sandhurst School has over 1000 pupils and specialises in science. The headteacher is Debbie Smith.[1][3]

History[]

The school was opened in 1969.[2][4] The first headteacher was Bill Dally.[2] He retired from the post in 1982.[5]

An extension was added to the school in 1971 to accommodate an additional 200 pupils and a youth wing.[6][7]

In 1984, teachers at the school held a "work-in" in the context of strike action.[8] This was intended to show people how much work teachers do in their own time.[8]

In 1986, a siren was installed at the school, to be sounded if a patient escapes from Broadmoor Hospital.[9]

In 2020, problems with the building meant pupils had to move to temporary classrooms.[10]

Ofsted inspections[]

As of 2021, the school's most recent Ofsted inspection was in 2017, with an overall judgement of Good.[3]

It transpires that while the new secondary school at Sandhurst was being designed and built the project was known as Sandhurst Comprehensive School. The headmaster and governors continued to call it such. But it is not the education committee's policy to use (I quote the minute) "a description in place of a name." It wants a distinctive name for each school. So the governors decided on a name and this has now been recommended by the committee. It is . . . (sic) Sandhurst School.
