The Seymchan (Russian: Сеyмчан) is a river in Sakha Republic, Russia. It is a left tributary of the Kolyma.[1] [2]

The river rises in highlands to the north east of Seymchan township and travels about 60 kilometers in a large arc, emptying into the Kolyma river as a twisted river delta beside Seymchan Airport.[citation needed]

The name comes from the Yakut language word Kheymchen, which is an area of open water surrounded by sea ice.[3]

The Seymchan River has a severe subarctic climate Dfc, closely bordering the Dfd subtype with very dry winters due to the influence of the persistent Siberian High in the months of low sun. Winters are extremely cold, although not as cold as Dfd climates such as Oymyakon, Delyankir, Verkhoyansk etc. Summers are short and mild, but sometimes very warm. Precipitation is quite low, but is somewhat higher in summer than at other times of the year.[citation needed]
