Shabnam Nasimi (Persian: شبنم نسیمی‎) (born 16 February 1991) is a British-Afghan social activist and political commentator. She is the Executive Director of Conservative Friends of Afghanistan, a group that exists to promote understanding and support for Afghanistan in the United Kingdom.

Early life and education[]

Nasimi’s family came to the UK from Afghanistan, after fleeing the Taliban regime in 1999. Her father Nooralhaq Nasimi gained his PhD in Law in the former Soviet Union and her mother Mahboba completed her Masters in Jurisprudence; they prized education above all else.[1]

Nasimi went to St Saviour's and St Olave's Church of England School until 18, completing her GCSE and A-levels. She was educated at the Open University where she gained a degree in Law. She then completed an MSc in Global Governance and International Security at Birkbeck University.[2][3][4]

Career[]

In 2019, Nasimi founded Conservative Friends of Afghanistan.[5]

She has written for The Times,[6][7] Prospect magazine, the websites Quillette and Free Market Conservatives[8] and the blog ConservativeHome.[9][10] Nasimi has appeared as a political commentator on Newsnight, BBC News, ITV News, Channel 4[11] and Channel 5 News, as well as other international media[12] to provide commentary and analysis on British Politics, foreign policy, immigration and Social integration, ethnic minority communities in the UK and gender equality.[13]

Honours and awards[]

In 2019, Nasimi was nominated and shortlisted as one of the BBC’s 100 Women during 2019.[14][15]

Political views and activity[]

In 2019, Nasimi was a vocal advocate for Brexit, a stance which, in cultural circles and amongst ethnic minority communities was quite alien. She emphasises the democratic referendum result. Nasimi is known for being the first person of British Afghan heritage to be a Conservative in the UK.[citation needed]

Nasimi endorsed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Leadership Election, working to secure the so-called "Black, Asian and minority ethnic" vote. At the 2019 general election, she worked with Conservative Campaign Headquarters to lead on outreach and engagement of British Afghans in the UK and endorsed the Conservatives.[16][17]
