Shaun Stephen Bailey (born 22 July 1992)[1] is a British Conservative Party politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich West at the 2019 general election.[2]

Early life and career[]

Raised in Newport, Shropshire, in a single-parent family, Bailey attended Burton Borough School in Newport, Shropshire & studied for his A-Levels at Idsall School in Shifnal. After school he read Law and French at Aberystwyth University, graduating with an LLB, and began study for an LLM at the same institution but did not complete it. He instead studied for a master's degree in Legal Practice at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Prior to his election, Bailey worked as a trainee solicitor for Barclays Bank PLC.[3]

Political career[]

Prior to his election Bailey had a number of roles as an activist and volunteer in the Conservative Party. Bailey contested his first election in 2012 when he contested the Borth Ward on Ceredigion County Council.

In 2016 Bailey contested the Hester's Way Ward[4] on Cheltenham Borough Council and in 2017 he contested the Hester's Way and Springbank Division on Gloucestershire County Council.[5]

In 2019 Bailey was co-opted as a Councillor for the Chetwynd Aston Ward on Chetwynd Aston & Woodcote Parish Councillor[6] a post he held until 2020. Bailey's mother is also a Conservative Councillor on Newport (Shropshire) Town Council.[7]

In November 2019, Bailey was selected as the Conservative Party's Candidate for the West Bromwich West Constituency. At the 2019 general election, Bailey gained West Bromwich West from Labour for the Conservatives. It had been held by Labour since a 2000 by-election. He became the first Conservative to represent the seat since its creation in 1974. Aged 27, this was some years before Bailey was born. He won the constituency on an 11.7% swing from Labour to the Conservatives.[2]

Bailey currently serves on two Select Committees in Parliament, the Work and Pensions Select Committee (Since March 2020) and the influential Public Accounts Committee (Since November 2020).[8]

Bailey is also a supporter and member of the Blue Collar Conservative Caucus, which seeks to support working class communities who feel left behind by the Labour Party, and ensure that the government places these communities at the heart of its policy making.[9]
