Sheffield Area Middle/High School is a public middle and high school located in the middle of Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest. The Sheffield campus is located along US Route 6 between Clarendon and Sheffield in eastern Warren County and is located on a 43-acre site. Sheffield Area Middle school/High School is one of four high schools operated by the Warren County School District.

Graduation Rate[]

In 2011, the graduation rate was 84%.[4] In 2010, the Pennsylvania Department of Education issued a new, 4 year cohort graduation rate.[5] Sheffield Area Middle High School graduation rate has been trading down for several years.

In 2011, the school achieved AYP status due to making progress in student achievement. In 2010, the school was in Warning status due to lagging academic achievement.[8] The school has a School Improvement Team [9] which has been working for 3 years to improve student achievement.[10]

SAT Scores[]

In 2010-2011, 39 Sheffield Area Middle / High School students took the SAT exams. The school's Verbal Average Score was 470. The Math average score was 494. The Writing average score was 456.[19] In 2009, Verbal Average Score was 469. The Math average score was 488. The Writing average score was 466. Pennsylvania ranked 40th among states with SAT scores: Verbal - 493, Math - 501, Writing - 479.[20] In the United States 1.65 million students took the exam in 2011. They averaged 497 (out of 800) verbal, 514 math and 489 in writing.[21]

Dual enrollment[]

The high school offers a Dual Enrollment program. This state program permits high school students to take courses, at local higher education institutions, to earn college credits. Students remain enrolled at their high school. The courses count towards high school graduation requirements and towards earning a college degree. The students continue to have full access to activities and programs at their high school. The college credits are offered at a deeply discounted rate. The state offered a small grant to assist students in costs for tuition, fees and books[22] Under the Pennsylvania Transfer and Articulation Agreement, many Pennsylvania colleges and universities accept these credits for students who transfer to their institutions.[23]

For the 2009-10 funding year, the school district received a state grant of $2,759 for the program.[24]

The school trails the state achievement levels in all but one test and all grades.[25]

Extracurriculars[]

The district offers a variety of clubs, activities and sports. Eligibility for participation is determined by school board policy.

By Pennsylvania law, all K-12 students in the district, including those who attend a private nonpublic school, cyber charter school, charter school and those homeschooled, are eligible to participate in the extracurricular programs including all athletics. They must meet the same eligibility rules as the students enrolled in the district's schools.[32]

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors at Sheffield Area have the opportunity to spend one-half of each school day at the Warren County Career Center in Warren where they can learn from one of fourteen career programs, as well as the possibility of earning advanced placement credits for post-secondary education.
