Shi Islet[4][5][6] (Chinese: 獅嶼; pinyin: Shī Yǔ; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: sai-sū; lit. 'Lion Islet') (also Shi Yu,[7][8] Shih Yü,[9] Shiyu,[2][10] Shiyu Islet[2] and Lion Islet[10][11]) is an islet located northwest of Lesser Kinmen (Lieyu) in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan).[2][10][11][12][13] Military personnel are stationed on Shi Islet.[2][3] The islet was originally named Shu Islet '鼠嶼'[14] (pinyin: Shǔ Yǔ, meaning 'rat islet').

History[]

The islet appeared in the 2010 Japanese movie Liar Game: The Final Stage.[2]

At around 4 PM on August 19, 2016, a 23 year old Chinese man landed on Shi Islet after rowing from Xiamen Island (Amoy) on a piece of polystyrene and was immediately arrested by the Shi Islet defense forces.[7][15][16]

On July 23, 2019, (賀政), the new leader of the ROC Army Kinmen Defense Command (陸軍金門防衛指揮部), visited the soldiers on Shi Islet and Menghu Islet.[17][18]

Geography[]

Shi Islet is located 1 km (0.62 mi) from Lesser Kinmen Island (Lieyu) and 4 km (2.5 mi) from Xiamen Island (Amoy), Fujian, China (PRC).[2][19]

The movie, a continuation of a popular television drama, portrays Shiyu as a clandestine military base.
