Shirahata Castle (白旗城, Shirahata-jō) also called as Shirohata Castle is the remains of a castle structure in Kamigōri, Akō, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It is located on a 440 meter mountain.[1]
It is believed Shirahata Castle was built by Akamatsu Enshin in preparation for the attack of Nitta Yoshisada's army and later, the castle became Harima Akamatsu clan's main bastion.[2]
In 1336, the castle was surrounded by Nitta's large army. Despite an overwhelming attacking force, numbering around 60,000, the 2,000 men of the Castle's garrison under Akamatsu Enshin held off the siege over 50 days.[3][1] As a result, Ashikaga Takauji's army had time to regroup its forces in Kyushu and he was able to win the Battle of Minatogawa.[1][3]
Its ruins have been protected as a National Historic Site as one of the Remains of Akamatsu-shi Castles, combining both Okishio Castle and Kanjōsan Castle, since 1996.[4][5]
