The Singapore Food Agency (Abbreviation: SFA; Malay: Agensi Makanan Singapura; Tamil: சிங்கப்பூர் உணவு அமைப்பு; Chinese: 新加坡食品局) is a statutory board formed under the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment to oversee food safety and security.[1]
History[]
The agency was first announced on 26 July 2018 as a consolidation of all food-related functions, then carried out by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). In addition, all non-food plant and animal-related functions of AVA was transferred to the National Parks Board (NParks). The National Centre for Food Science (NCFS) was set up to consolidate the food laboratory capabilities across the different statutory boards.[2][3]
SFA had set a target for 30% of home-grown food in Singapore by 2030, up from 10% now. This will be done by finding new solutions to raise productivity of food supplies.[4] With that, the agency was launched on 1 April 2019 by Masagos Zulkifli, marking the first day of operations.[1]
