"Skate" is a song by American super-duo Silk Sonic, consisting of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak. It was released on July 30, 2021, as the second single from Silk Sonic's upcoming debut studio album, An Evening with Silk Sonic.[4][5][6] "Skate" was written by Mars, Brandon Anderson, Dernst Emile II, James Fauntleroy, Domitille Degalle and JD Beck, while the production was handled by Mars and D'Mile.

Background and release[]

The duo teased new music constantly in the months leading up to the song's release.[7] On July 28, the band posted skating emojis on their social media, hinting at an impending release.[8]

In an interview for Apple Music, Mars confessed that the track "came about as part of thought exercise in the studio" as he and his team were imagining if they were performing a song "in the middle of a roller rink" and what the bass, the guitar, and the drums would sound like. Mars added, "And I wanted to play congas and that's what you get. You get a song called "Skate". Talking about I'm trying to float. I'm trying to glide."[9]

On July 30, 2021, "Skate" was released as the second single via digital download and streaming services in various countries by Aftermath Entertainment and Atlantic Records.[10] On the same date, Warner Music Group also released the track to be added to Italian contemporary hit radio stations.[11] American adult contemporary radio stations began adding the track onto their playlists on August 2, 2021, through Atlantic Records.[12]

Critical reception[]

While the band itself referred to the track as a "Summertime Jam", Althea Legaspi of Rolling Stone thought the song delivers ''with its buoyant, sunny vibes".[13] Hypebeast writer Sophie Caraan opined that the track was "arguably one of the most infectious musical offerings of the year", with the duo continuing "to take structural cues from the smooth tunes of the '70s, adding layers of their harmonic vocals to pay homage to the one of music's most influential decades".[14]

Music video[]

The music video was released alongside the song release on July 30, featuring vintage visuals. It was directed by Mars, Florent Déchard and Philippe Tayag. The video sees Mars and Paak playing drums as women rollerskate around them.[15]
