Smilde is a town in the Netherlands' northern province of Drenthe, is part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) southwest of the province capital of Assen. Smilde was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Middenveld.[2]
In 2001, Smilde had 3,460 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 1.2 square kilometers (0.46 sq mi), and contained 1,449 residences.[3] The statistical Smilde area—which can also include the surrounding countryside—has a population of around 4,890.[1]
