Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is a French and English-speaking university established on 7 October 2006 in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The university affiliated with the French Sorbonne University (former Paris-Sorbonne University, Paris IV) in the United Arab Emirates.

History[]

An international agreement between the French Sorbonne University (former Paris-Sorbonne University, Paris IV), and the government of Abu Dhabi was signed on 19 February 2006 with the aim of bringing to Abu Dhabi the best international standards in higher education.[1] Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (formerly Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi) was established on 30 May 2006 by a decree of the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

The University opened its doors on 7 October 2006 in a temporary building. On 6 December 2009, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (formerly Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi) moved into its permanent campus on Al Reem Island.[2] The Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi purpose-built campus spans across 93,000m2 of stat-of-the-art purpose-built teaching and recreational facilities, including onsite student accommodation, library (that accommodates 200,000 books), a 700-seat auditorium, a sports centre and a cafeteria.

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi offers a wide range of 30+ undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple disciplines in humanities and science. The programmes offered follow the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and all programmes are delivered by highly qualified academics from the Paris following the French higher education system. The teaching language is in both French and English (with a few programmes taught in Arabic as well). All Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi degrees are awarded by Sorbonne University in Paris and University of Paris, and are accredited by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA).

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi operates under the administration of Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK).Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is managed by a board of trustees of six members. HE Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh UAE Minister of State is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Professor Jean Chambaz the President of Sorbonne University in Paris is the university's Vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The accommodations in the university residences are all single rooms. Two residence blocks are available, one for male students and another for female students. The university residences are adjacent to the main campus to facilitate students' daily commute. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi campus is located in Al Reem Island in close proximity to Abu Dhabi city centre.

Recently the university expanded its programme offerings further by launching a Bachelor in Records Management and Archival Science and a Bachelor in Mathematics, Specialisation in Data Science for Artificial Intelligence with more undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the pipeline.
