St Joseph High School (Trumbull, CT) - founded in 1962 - is a self-governing institution within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport. It is a co-ed school of approximately 830 students.[2]

History[]

Founded in 1962, St Joseph High School was run by the Marist Brothers and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.[3] The following individuals have served as Principals: Brother Edward Caffrey, Monsignor Richard Shea, Matthew Kenney, Kenneth Mayo, James P. Keane, and Nancy DiBuono (current principal).[4] In the 2000s, St Joes adopted the Principal/President school model; the following individuals have served as Presidents: Richard Bishop, Dr William Fitzgerald.[5] In 2019, Dr Fitzgerald announced his retirement and the appointment of his successor, Mr David Klein.[6]

Academics[]

St Joseph High School offers a variety of innovative and tech-forward programs, including: a 1:1 iPad Program, Virtual High School, Aeronautical Engineering Course, and Immersion Trips.[7]

St Joseph High School offers College Level, AP, Honors, and College Preparatory level courses.[8] Fifteen (15) advanced placement (AP) courses are currently offered at St Joes, including: English Language, English Literature, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, U.S. History, European History, American Gov't, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, French, and Spanish.[9]

Clubs/Activities[]

St Joseph High School offers more than 50 student clubs and organizations, including 5 National Honor Societies.[10]

Catholic Identity[]

St Joseph High School offers Mass each day in the Alumni Chapel located on campus.[11] The school also boasts a full-time Chaplain, Fr. Eric Silva.[12]

Service[]

St Joseph High School students are required to complete community service: 15 hours freshman year, 20 hours sophomore year, 25 hours junior year, 30 hours senior year.[13]

Athletics[]

St Joseph High School is part of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC). The school fields 49 teams in 19 sports, including: Cheerleading, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track, Softball, and Tennis. The school also participates in Co-Op Teams with Trumbull High School for Swimming & Diving, Ice Hockey, and Gymnastics.[14] Since 1975, SJ Athletic teams and individuals have won more than 100 Championships.[15]

In 2019, the St Joseph High School Varsity Football Team became the first team to win 3 different Class Championships (Class S, Class M, Class L) in 3 consecutive years.[16]
