Sunbury, Georgia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sunbury is a ghost town in Liberty County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.[1]

History[]

Sunbury was founded in 1758, and named after Sunbury, England, the native home of a first settler.[2] Founding Father Lyman Hall was one of the community's leading citizens. Variant names were "Sunbery" and "Sunbury Landing".[1] The initial settlement was protected by the nearby Fort Morris.[3]

A post office was established at Sunbury in 1793, and remained in operation until 1841.[4]

Sunbury was incorporated as a town in 1791.[2] Sunbury served as the county seat of Liberty County from 1784 until the seat was transferred to Riceborough in 1797.[5]

The Sunbury Cemetery is located in the community, and is one of the few remaining structures left in the community.
