Surasaptak underpass (Bengali: সুরসপ্তক আন্ডারপাস) is the largest pedestrian underpass built in Bangladesh. The underpass is located near Kurmitola General Hospital and Radisson Hotel at the MES square of Airport road, adjacent to Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College in Dhaka.[1][2][3]

History[]

There was no pedestrian bridge before the construction of Surasaptak underpass. There was a zebra crossing here for pedestrian crossings.[4] On 29 July 2018, two students named Rajib and Dia Khanam Meem died in an accident in front of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College. After that the safe road movement started after the death of the two. One of the demands of the protesters was to build an underpass in front of the college.[2]

The foundation stone of the underpass was laid on August 12 of the same year. The 24 Engineer Brigade of the Bangladesh Army was in charge of the construction of Surasaptak. Taka 56 crore was spent on its construction. This underpass was named Sursaptak in honor of the seven heroes who were martyred in the liberation war of 1971.[5] Surasaptak underpass was constructed by digging tunnels under the ground without cutting the road (box pushing technology).[6]

However, the Safe Roads Movement committee sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding immediate reopening of the three-year-old underpass, which should be named after Rajiv-Dia, the two students died in road accident, instead of Surasaptak.[7]

Construction works appear to be exacerbated during the corona outbreak.[6] Finally, on 12 January 2022, the Sursaptak underpass was opened.[8]

Description[]

The 15 meter high underpass consists of four 42 meter long tunnels. There are four ways to enter and exit.[5] It is 135 meters long and 5 meters wide. It has a radius of 320 meters, a footpath of 6 meters and a boundary wall of 63 meters.[9] There is a triangle shaped museum here. The museum has murals of seven heroes including Bangabandhu at one end of the wall and pictures of Shaheed Minar and National Memorial at the other end. Digital display boards have been installed in the middle wall for the convenience of pedestrians. This air-conditioned underpass has been constructed to provide 24 hours light access. There is a place for pedestrians to rest on the east side of the road. There is a separate sloping path for the Sursaptak, which is covered by the CCTV surveillance, to use the wheelchair.[6] There are special arrangements for the elderly and the disabled. In addition to the stairs, there are elevators and escalators.[9]
