TV Bahia, virtual channel 11 (UHF digital channel 29), is a TV Globo-affiliated television station licensed to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Owned by Rede Bahia, TV Bahia is the principal station of Rede Bahia de Televisão, a statewide television network composed of another five TV stations. TV Bahia's studios and transmitter are located on Prof. Aristídes Novis Street in the Federação district, on Salvador.

History[]

Rede Manchete (1985–1987)[]

TV Bahia signed on for the first time on March 10, 1985. It was Salvador's fourth television station. The inauguration had a ceremony held at 6:45 pm, presented by Xuxa Meneghel, then host of the children's program Clube da Criança on Rede Manchete, the network with which TV Bahia had initially affiliated, in addition to the presence of various authorities, such as then Governor of Bahia João Durval Carneiro, the then Minister of Communications, Antônio Carlos Magalhães, and the then Archbishop of Salvador and Primate of Brazil, Dom Avelar Brandão Vilela.[3] Initially, its shareholders were the entrepreneurs ACM Júnior and César Mata Pires.[4]

TV Globo (1987–present)[]

In December 1986, Rede Globo unexpectedly terminated its affiliation contract with TV Aratu (channel 4), its then affiliate since 1969, determining that the station cease broadcasting its programming on January 20, 1987. Globo's decision occurred shortly after Grupo Globo's purchase of NEC's brazilian branch, which raised suspicions that Antônio Carlos Magalhães would have helped Roberto Marinho's group to have shareholding control of the company (see Takeover of NEC Brazil), and that Marinho would have ceded the Globo affiliation for TV Bahia as a way to benefit the then minister's family. On January 13, 1987, Luís Viana Neto, one of the shareholders of TV Aratu, went to Brasília, along with 19 other deputies, to complain to then President José Sarney about ACM's interference in the state communications.[4] On January 15, Judge Luiz Fux, of the 9th Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro, granted TV Aratu an injunction preventing TV Bahia from retransmitting Globo's programming.[5] The injunction was overturned on January 23, after TV Globo filed a writ of mandamus in the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro to ensure the transmission of its programming by TV Bahia.[6] As soon as it received the notification, without informing viewers, the station immediately began transmitting Globo's signal. TV Aratu, however, refused to change its affiliation, which meant that viewers in Bahia had two channels broadcasting Globo for three days in a row across the state.[7] By order of the regional direction of National Department of Telecommunications (DENTEL), TV Aratu was forced to stop broadcasting Globo's programming on January 26.[8] The station, then, began to broadcast the programming of Rede Manchete, and continued in court trying to nullify Globo's writ of mandamus. On March 31, judges Jorge Loretti, Narciso Pinto and Astrogildo Freitas of the 5th Civil Chamber of Rio de Janeiro, suspended Globo's writ of mandamus after judging that the network filed an appeal after the deadline.[9] TV Aratu returned, after 64 days, to retransmitting Globo's programs, but TV Bahia did not accept the order immediately and once again both broadcast the same programming.[10] The court battle lasted for another three months, until on July 6, judge Nicolau Mary Júnior granted the injunction in favor of Globo, and TV Bahia finally could be, in the end, the only affiliate of the network.[11]

On June 23, 2000, Sky started to carry TV Bahia on its pay-TV via satellite system.[12]

In 2008, in addition to investing in a digital signal, TV Bahia invested around R$ 9 million in a new transmitter, a new antenna, installed at a height of 160 meters, and a new master control.[13][14]

In 2012, César Mata Pires sold his share of Rede Bahia to Grupo EP, owner of the regional television network based in cities of São Paulo and one city of Minas Gerais, EPTV, also an affiliate of TV Globo.[15]

On July 21, 2012, it was announced that the then candidate for mayor of Salvador, Nelson Pelegrino, would file a lawsuit against TV Bahia, accusing it of "benefiting" the also candidate at the time, ACM Neto, in an report about the fifth anniversary of the death of senator Antônio Carlos Magalhães, shown on the previous day at the noon newscast Bahia Meio Dia, due to the fact that he was interviewed and participated in the occasion.[16] On August 3, however, the Electoral Court of Brazil ruled the accusation as "unfounded". According to Ângela Bacellar Batista, judge of the 18th Electoral Zone, there was no breach of isonomy, as the then-candidate Mário Kertész, who was running for the same elective position, was also interviewed and participated in the same report.[17]

"The simple fact that the TV station is owned by the candidate's family does not imply an offense to the principle of isonomy and, in this case, the report is included within the freedom of the press, essential to the democratic rule of law, whose dissemination of the manifestation of those present at the ceremony, purpose of the report, cannot be confused with the prohibition of article 45 of Law 9,504/97".

— Ângela Bacellar Batista

In 2014, the station was the TV Globo affiliate with the highest audience in relation to the others in Brazil.[18]

In May 2019, Rede Bahia carried out layoffs of journalists and employees. The reason would be the losses the group went through in 2018. CEDOC (Documentation Center) and marketing team employees were fired, in addition to journalist Anna Valéria, who had been at the station for 31 years.[19]

Analog-to-digital conversion[]

In November 2008, TV Bahia started its digital transmissions in high definition (HD) on an experimental basis on channel 29 UHF, and on December 1 of the same year, it officially launched it, thus becoming a pioneer in terrestrial digital transmissions in Salvador, Bahia and the Northeast Region of Brazil, making the capital of Bahia the seventh city to receive digital television in Brazil, exactly one year after the official launch in the country.[21][22]

TV Bahia shut down its analog signal, over VHF channel 11, on September 27, 2017, as part of the federally mandated transition from analog to digital television.[23] The station's digital signal remains on its pre-transition UHF channel 29, using PSIP to display TV Bahia's virtual channel as 11 on digital television receivers.

The station made the local generation of the match between Cruzeiro x Flamengo, valid for the Brazil Cup final, narrated by sports anchor Thiago Mastroianni, as well as live participations from the station's master control with reporter Giana Mattiazzi, who showed the signal being interrupted at 11:59 PM, after completion of the match, and being replaced by a notice from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and ANATEL about the switch-off.[24]

Programming[]

Entertainment programming[]

TV Bahia broadcasts two variety shows on Saturdays. Conexão Bahia deals with themes related to knowledge and culture, which host is playwright Aldri Anunciação, adopting a format similar to the now defunct show Aprovado. At Mosaico Baiano, presented by Pablo Vasconcelos, curiosities, clips, documentaries, special series, cinema tips, among others, are exhibited.

Were part of TV Bahia's schedule: The interview program hosted by Michelle Marie Magalhães, Michelle Marie Entrevista (which featured reports by Wagner Moura),[25] the auditorium program Arerê Geral (with Jackson Costa and Flávia Mendonça as presenters and direction by Fernando Guerreiro), premiered on January 18, 2001,[26] and Na Carona (hosted by Liliane Reis).[27][28][29] On September 9, 2017, Aprovado, presented by Jackson Costa, was discontinued, and in its place, Conexão Bahia premiered on September 16, presented by Renata Menezes and Aldri Anunciação.[30] Renata left the program and the station at February 18, 2019.[31]

On January 5, 2019, the musical program Sente o Som premiered on Saturday afternoons, hosted by journalist Camila Marinho and directed by Marcela Amorim. The seven programs of the first season are scheduled for interviews with artists from Bahia and musical performances.[32]

In June 2020, the station was criticized for choosing Léo Santana, a pagode singer, to appear on São João do Nordeste, the São João festivities special program from Globo's owned-and-operated flagship station for the Northeast of Brazil based in Recife, Pernambuco, TV Globo Nordeste. Artists from different musical genres criticized the decision. In a statement, TV Bahia stated that it gave space to several other artists during its programming for the month of June, through "special programs, reports and interviews about the São João festivities".[33]

On October 24, 2020, the station debuted the special program Sessão Pet, with Pablo Vasconcelos and his pet dog, "Lilica", with content about pet care, as well as stories of owners with their pets. There were 3 episodes.[34] On November 28, TV Bahia returned with Na Carona, also hosted by Pablo Vasconcelos, in a special edition of 2 episodes. In the first, a trip to the city of Porto Seguro,[35] and in the second, to Ilhéus.[36]

Special programming[]

TV Bahia annually covers the Carnival of Salvador in February or March, with the transmission of the special program Bahia Folia, occupying several spaces of TV Globo programming and local programming during the period, in addition to participation in the national network shows. Since 1994, the station has been promoting the Bahia Folia Trophy, a award that elects the most successful hit of the Bahian Carnival through popular voting.[37]

Between 1999 and 2014, the station also live broadcast the Salvador Summer Festival, promoted by iContent, which is a subsidiary of Rede Bahia.[38] In 2015, the event started to be broadcast by the Canais Globo's entertainment subscription channel Multishow, but the station still promotes the event in its schedule, in addition to airing specials with the best moments.[39]

Sports programming[]

From 2011 to 2020, TV Bahia was the official station for the Bahia Football Championship.[40] The station doesn't signed a contract with the Football Association of Bahia for 2021, and was replaced by TVE Bahia (channel 10), an TV Brasil-affiliated public television station, which became the championship's official station for the year.[41][42]

Currently, the station is responsible for locally generating part of the transmissions of the matches of Bahia's soccer clubs for the Brazil Cup and Brazilian Championship (A and B series), when Globo has the rights to broadcast these competitions. The station's main sports broadcasting team is composed of Thiago Mastroianni as sportscaster, comments by Danilo Ribeiro and Gustavo Castelucci, as well as reports from Sérgio Pinheiro and Renan Pinheiro.

News operation[]

TV Bahia currently broadcasts 23 hours, 20 minutes of locally produced newscasts each week (with 4 hours, 15 minutes each weekday and 2 hours, 5 minutes on Saturdays). The station also produces the 25-minute local sports show Globo Esporte Bahia, from Monday to Saturday, right after the newscast Bahia Meio Dia.

The first TV newscasts on TV Bahia were Bahia Agora and Jornal da Manhã.[43] The station also produced the local edition of Rede Manchete's sports program, Manchete Esportiva, presented by Ivan Pedro, as well as another program, called Bahia e Esporte.[44] In 1986, TV Bahia hired journalist Kátia Guzzo from then-SBT affiliate TV Itapoan (channel 5, now RecordTV Itapoan); She started to anchor Bahia Agora. In 1987, Kátia Guzzo was transferred to Jornal da Manhã.[43]

In 1987, soon after the beginning of the affiliation with Globo, TV Bahia debuted the local newscast BATV, in 3 editions, replacing Bahia Agora. At the same time, the station also replaced Manchete Esportiva with the local news block of Globo Esporte, with a duration of 3 minutes. In 1989, this local block had a duration of 13 minutes.[45] As in other states, the late night edition of the local newscast, called BATV 3ª Edição, was aired until March 24, 1989.[46][47]

In 1991, Kátia Guzzo was replaced in Jornal da Manhã by Regina Coeli, who began to be accompanied by co-anchor Casemiro Neto in 1993.[48]

In 1993, TV Bahia re-released Bahia Agora, replacing the noon newscast BATV 1ª Edição.[49] The new newscast was co-anchored by Kátia Guzzo and Anna Valéria. In July 1995, the program was reformulated, adopting a "variety magazine" format, and being only anchored by Anna Valéria.[49] Kátia Guzzo, in turn, was transferred to the new BATV 1ª Edição.[50]

In 1996, Kátia Guzzo began to anchor the 6:50 PM newscast BATV 2ª Edição.[51] She replaced Emmerson José, who anchored the newscast since 1988,[52] and had left to be a candidate for city council in Salvador in that year's municipal elections.[53] Jornal da Manhã began to be anchored by Denis Rivera. Regina Coeli replaced Kátia at BATV 1ª Edição,[54] and Casemiro Neto was transferred to reporting.

In early 1997, Regina Coeli left TV Bahia to work at the newspaper A Tarde,[55] and BATV 1ª Edição began to be co-anchored by Casemiro Neto and Cristina Barude.[56] On October 1 of the same year, Jornal da Manhã was reformulated, and TV Bahia added co-anchoring and comments by journalist Genildo Lawinscky, recently hired by the station.[57] On August 25, the station premiered Bahia Meio Dia, a noon newscast replacing BATV 1ª Edição and Bahia Agora. The new newscast featured anchors Casemiro Neto, Anna Valéria and Cristina Barude, as well as comments by Genildo Lawinscky.[58] In 1998, journalist Patrícia Nobre was transferred from TV Verdes Mares, a Globo-affiliated station based in Fortaleza, Ceará,[59] and replaced Denis Rivera at Jornal da Manhã.[60]

In 2000, journalist Fabiana Ferraz was transferred from TV Norte (now TV São Francisco), a sister Globo-affiliated station based in Juazeiro, to TV Bahia, and began to co-anchor Bahia Meio Dia alongside Casemiro Neto.[61] In 2001, she was replaced by Paula Trainer, who was transferred from Globo's all news channel, GloboNews, in 1998. She stayed on the station until August 2003, when was replaced by Patrícia Nobre.[59][60] In the same month, Adriana Quadros (then with Salvador-licensed radio station Itapoan FM 97.5) was hired by TV Bahia, and replaced Patrícia at Jornal da Manhã.

In May 2008, the station changed its news anchors. Bahia Meio Dia was once again anchored by a pair; Patrícia Nobre, who was presenting the newscast on her own after Casemiro Neto left TV Bahia (he had debuted his journalistic popular program Que Venha o Povo on already SBT-affiliated station at the time, TV Aratu, on February 25),[62] was now accompanied by journalist Jony Torres (then with TVE Bahia). BATV, the evening newscast, begin to be co-anchored by recently-hired Jefferson Beltrão (then at already RecordTV owned-and-operated station at the time, TV Itapoan) and Kátia Guzzo.[63]

In August 2009, Adriana Quadros was rehired by TV Itapoan, and was replaced by Georgina Maynart at Jornal da Manhã.[64] Genildo Lawinscky continued on the newscast until 2011, when he was replaced by Ricardo Ishmael. In the same year, then-reporter and eventual anchor Camila Marinho started co-anchoring Bahia Meio Dia with Fernando Sodake.

In February 2013, Silvana Freire started to co-anchor Jornal da Manhã with Ricardo Ishmael, replacing Georgina Maynart.

In November 2014, journalist Giana Mattiazzi was hired for the station's news team.[65]

In 2014, TV Bahia started to use a helicopter (called "RedeCop") for traffic and other coverages and reports that need aerial images.[66] The vehicle's debut was at the carnival that year. The station ended the contract with the São Paulo-based company Time News, responsible for the helicopter, on June 30, 2016.[67][68]

In 2015, as well as other affiliates that aired local programming right after Fantástico on Sundays, TV Bahia's weekly news program Rede Bahia Revista, which had been aired for 17 years, was discontinued to make way for Rede Globo's new programming on Sundays.[69]

On February 20, 2015, Camila Marinho made her debut in charge of BATV, replacing Kátia Guzzo,[70] who became a special reporter for the station 1 month later.[71] With that, Silvana Freire replaced her, and became the co-anchor of Bahia Meio Dia alongside Fernando Sodake. To replace Silvana in Jornal da Manhã, TV Bahia cast Jessica Smetak, who had already replaced the titleholder during vacation in 2014.[72] On March 2, 2015, Jefferson Beltrão was fired from TV Bahia after 7 years,[73] and Camila started to present BATV alone.

In 2017, TV Bahia began to lost the first isolated place in noon ratings to RecordTV Itapoan in Salvador, during the exhibition of the journalistic local program Balanço Geral BA, hosted by José Eduardo (known as "Bocão"). In the same year, TV Bahia hired Eurico Meira da Costa (formely with the Globo affiliate in Santa Catarina, NSC TV) as news director,[74] after 17-year running news director Roberto Appel retired.[75] One of the actions of the new director was, as of November 26, 2018, the declination of the airing of the Globo's health program Bem Estar in the weekly schedule to increase the airing time of Bahia Meio Dia, which started from 30 to 15 minutes earlier from other local TV news programs of TV Globo affiliates at the noon.[76]

On February 26, 2018, the station committed a gaffe, where it accidentally showed the body of a dead man in matinal local newscast Jornal da Manhã, which is not normally practiced in the station's editorial line. On the occasion, reporter Vanderson Nascimento, in a live link, spoke about a body that had been found on Vasco da Gama Avenue, in Salvador. Beside him, in the background of the image, appeared the corpse, which remained on the screen for 40 seconds, when the reporter was alerted and positioned himself in front of the body, so that it left the camera frame.[77] The direction of TV Bahia clarified that what happened was just a "framing error", and Globo denied that it had changed its editorial line, stating that it "expressly recommends not showing images of corpses".

On May 7, 2018, Jessica Senra, who had been hired from RecordTV Itapoan in March by TV Bahia, debuted as anchor on Bahia Meio Dia.[78] With this, Fernando Sodake, then the noon newscast's anchor, was transferred to BATV, replacing Camila Marinho, who cried on her farewell from the newscast on May 4th.[79] Silvana Freire became an occasional anchor, and returned as a principal anchor of a newscast on August 25, 2018, with the debut of Bom Dia Sábado, a morning newscast broadcast on Saturdays.[80]

On June 4, 2019, Valber Carvalho, long time host of agribusiness journalistic program Bahia Rural, ends his contract with TV Bahia after two decades of work at the station.[81] TV Bahia announced a new version of the program, with new graphics and set, this time presented by Georgina Maynart (who was already on the program's team as a reporter) and José Raimundo, a reporter for the station known for making special reports for the network's programs, such as the Globo Repórter. The new format of the program debuted on September 1 in that year.[82]

On July 15, 2019, the station debuted new studios and sets for its newscasts. The sets had been in construction for 2 months and, according to the then director of journalism, Eurico Meira da Costa, "reflect more modernity and aspects that refer to the characteristics of Bahia".[83]

On January 10, 2020, Silvana Freire, anchor of Bom Dia Sábado, is fired after 8 years of work in the station's news team.[84] On January 7, 2021, José Raimundo announced on his social networks that he was leaving TV Bahia after 31 years.[85]

On March 31, 2021, TV Bahia launched the local version of the 1-minute news bulletin G1 em 1 Minuto, highlighting the news from the G1 Bahia website, anchored by the website reporter, Gabriel Gonçalves.[86] The debut took place in celebration of 10 years of the local version of Globo's news website. Shortly after, in April 19, the anchoring of the bulletin began to be shared with Itana Alencar, also a G1 Bahia reporter.[87]
