Tadap (transl. Yearning) is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language romantic action drama film directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment banner, with Fox Star Studios serving as distributor and co-producer.[4] A remake of the Telugu film RX 100 (2018), the film stars debutant Ahan Shetty and Tara Sutaria.[5] The film released theatrically on 3 December 2021.[1]

Plot

Ishana lives in Mussoorie with his adopted father who is addressed by everyone as Daddy. Daddy is a close aide of Damodar Nautiyal, a politician who is fighting the state elections. Ishana runs a theatre and helps Daddy and Damodar in political activities. On the day of vote counting, Damodar's daughter Ramisa returns from London where she is studying. Damodar wins the elections and when Ishana is celebrating the former’s victory, Ramisa spots him. She gets attracted to him. Soon, she befriends him and even confesses that she is attracted to him. Ishana falls crazily in love with her and they begin an intimate romantic relationship.

Ramisa tells Ishana that Damodar is insisting on getting her married. She assures Ishana that she will convince her father to change his mind and that they should not meet for a few days to which he agrees. She kisses and leaves him and at that exact moment, Damodar sees them. He and Ramisa's grandmother decide to separate the lovers and teach Ishana a lesson. Ishana asks Daddy to go and meet Damodar and convince him for their wedding. But unfortunately on the way to Damodar's house he meets with an accident and has been admitted in the hospital. Meanwhile, Ishana is shocked to know that Damodar has fixed Ramisa's wedding to the person of his choice i.e Anurag Mehta and when Ishana reaches the venue he's badly beaten by Damodar's goons and Ramisa in the meantime gets married unwillingly and is being sent to London.

Three years later, Ishana unable to get over with his past with Ramisa, still loves her. He is now an hyper aggressive man who decides to avenge Damodar by beating up his men and spoiling his businesses. Daddy is tired of convincing Ishana to forget the past and to leave Mussorie to which Ishana disagrees. One day, Ramisa returns from London and is shocked to know that Ishana still hasn't moved on. Ishana comes to Ramisa and makes a huge scene. Ramisa tells him to move on and let her live in peace but Ishana doesn’t listen. Daddy then arrives and decides to leave the city. Daddy reveals to Ishana’s friend that Ramisa is not what she seems. She used Ishana just to satisfy her sexual desires, while already in a relationship with her senior from college who she intends to marry. He had listened to all this when he had gone to meet Damodar regarding their marriage.

Meanwhile Ramisa sends goons to get Ishana killed and Ishana gets to know this. When Ramisa calls the man responsible for the kill, Ishana comes over and tries to strangulate her but in the end lets her go and then dies.

Production

In March 2019, Sajid Nadiadwala announced the remake of the 2018 Telugu film RX 100 with debutant Ahan Shetty, son of actor Suniel Shetty. Tara Sutaria was cast opposite him to play the lead. The director Milan Luthria told that the plot is intriguing and it is a love saga. In a statement, he said, "It's a stark love story, with both the leads having strong parts. I have seen Tara and Ahan perform together during the rehearsal workshops and they have immense chemistry."[4]

The principal photography began on 22 April 2019 in the Central Plaza theatre in the South Mumbai.[6][7] Major portion of the film was shot in Mumbai and Mussoorie.[8] The film was wrapped up on 10 March 2021, with Shetty writing, “It's a wrap on my first film!! Going to hold on to these memories forever".[9][10]

Release

Tadap was initially scheduled to release on 24 September 2021 in theatres. However, it was later pushed to 3 December 2021.[11][1] The movie was released in 2107 screens (1656 India & 451 Overseas).[12]

Reception

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a rating of 20% based on 10 reviews and an average rating of 3.3/10.[13]

Rachana Dubey of Times of India gave the film a rating of 3/5 and wrote, ‘‘Tadap unabashedly plays to the gallery with action, music, and well-shot visuals, it would have helped a great deal if its screenplay had created some more room for the actors to drive home a more memorable love story’’. She praised the performances of Shetty, Sutaria and Shukla and further wrote, ‘‘Ahan has an impressive screen presence and shows a spark in his debut outing; Saurabh Shukla pulls off his act with ample warmth and conviction and Tara Sutaria as Ramisa looks gorgeous in every frame’’.[14] Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times wrote, ‘‘Tadap serves you raw action laced with heavyweight dialogues, old-school romance, passion, deceit, bloodshed and a few poetic lines to add a tinge of humour’’. She praised Shetty's performance by writing, ‘‘Ahan Shetty and his character arch leaves a long impression. As a young, angry action hero, he makes an intense and impressive debut’’ but criticized Sutaria's character by stating it lacked ‘‘depth’’ and ‘‘dimension’’.[15] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film a rating of 1/5 and called its dialogues ‘‘bombastic’’ and its characters ‘‘stereotyped’’. She criticized the plot of the film by calling it ‘‘jaded’’ and worte, ‘‘Even if the debutant hero wanted to come off different, the jaded plot wouldn’t have allowed it’’.[16]

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the film a rating of 1.5/5 and called it a ‘‘stale’’ and ‘‘forgettable’’ film. He wrote, ‘‘Tadap does not have a single original sleight; But that is the least of the film's drawbacks. Scratch the prettified surface and what you find is a misogynistic rant masquerading as a movie’’. He praised Shetty by stating he exudes ‘‘toughness’’, ‘‘vulnerability’’ and ‘‘cherubic energy’’ but criticized the writing of Sutaria's character by stating, ‘‘Tara Sutaria, saddled with a poorly written role, is swamped out by a script that unfavourably disposed towards her’’.[17] Nandini Ramnath of Scroll gave the film a rating of 1/5 and called it a ‘‘twisted tale of misogyny’’. She wrote, ‘‘Tadap valourises obsessive male love and has a nasty solution in store for the woman who doesn’t respond in full measure’’.[18] Anupama Chopra of Film Companion wrote, ‘‘The worst sin in my book isn't bad politics, it's dullness and that is what Tadap's biggest problem is; Despite hewing closely to the original, the film doesn't find its footing’’. She praised the performances of Shetty and Sutaria and further wrote, ‘‘Ahan has a solid screen presence; He pulls off the action with ease. Tara looks lovely’’.[19] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare gave the film a rating of 3/5 and praised the performance of Shetty and Sharma stating, ‘‘He scores the most in action scenes [and] is at ease in front of the camera overall and makes a confident debut’’. Summing up Sharma wrote, ‘‘The leads definitely share a spark. Their histrionics is buoyed by good supporting performances by Kumud Mishra and Saurabh Shukla’’.[20]

Tadap grossed ₹4.05 crore on its first day of release, ₹4.12 crore on second day and ₹5.35 crore on third day, taking total opening weekend domestic gross to ₹13.52 crore.[3]
