Talwar (surname)

Talwar is a surname that is found among Khatri community. It is derived from the word "Talvar"" meaning sword.[1] Talwar is a surname found among Barah-Ghar/ Bahri sub-caste of the Khatris which also includes the clans of Chopra, Dhawan, Kakkar, Kapoor, Khanna, Mehra, Malhotra, Sehgal, Seth, Tandon, and Vohra.[1]

Before 1947, Talwars were located in Jhelum, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Hazara in the states of West Punjab and North West Frontier Province.[2] Some Talwars were also found in the neighborhoods of Jhang city.[3] A neighborhood in Rawalpindi called "Talwar'an da bazaar" is named after the Talwar clan.[4] Some Talwars also trace their ancestry from Afghanistan.[4]
