The Last Kids on Earth is a children's animation streaming television series, based on the book series of the same name by Max Brallier, that premiered on Netflix on September 17, 2019 with a one-hour first season. A ten-episode second season, or "Book 2", titled The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade, premiered on April 17, 2020.[1] Its third season, or "Book 3", was released on October 16, 2020. An interactive special, subtitled Happy Apocalypse to You, was released on April 6, 2021.[2]

  • Montserrat Hernandez as June Del Toro, a tomboyish 13-year-old girl who is Jack's crush but did not reciprocate his feelings, but starts to develop some in Book 2. She was trying to survive on her own until her parents come back for her with a rescue party; but she joins Jack's team and learns to have fun during the apocalypse. She was editor-in-chief of the school's paper.
  • Garland Whitt as Quint Baker, Jack's nerdy best friend who invents most of the gadgets the kids use to survive in their post-apocalyptic environment.
  • Brian Drummond as the vocal effects for Rover, a blue-furred canine-like monster who befriends Jack in Book 1 and becomes the team's pet and mascot.
  • Mark Hamill as Bardle, a gruff monster conjurer that takes up residence in Joe's Pizza who, like June, has been investigating the most recent phenomena and paranormal events.[3]
  • Catherine O'Hara as Skaelka, a female monster warrior that takes up residence in Joe's Pizza and becomes a friend of June's.[4]
  • Keith David as Thrull, the main antagonist in Book 2 who poses as the kids' friend at first before betraying them and his fellow monsters in Book 2, episode 8. He dies in Book 2, episode 10 "Dawn of Rezzoch".
  • Bruce Campbell as Chef, a cranky Squid monster that takes up residence in Joe's Pizza.[4][5]
  • Rosario Dawson as Rezzoch,[3] the main antagonist of the series as revealed in Book 2, episode 2; has her first lines and first full appearance in Book 2, episode 8 before becoming a series regular as of the 9th and Book 2 finale episodes.

In the canon version of this episode, (Assuming you make all the right choices), we open with the kids retreating from a female Mauler while Jack narrates a recap of the events leading to the Kids' status as the only humans left in Wakefield. After Quint stuns the creature with his fireworks gadget, the quartet retreats to Big Mama's new garage setting (from Book 3), where Jack reveals he plans on throwing June her fourteenth birthday party -- the first birthday since before the apocalypse began! The three needed items are a birthday cake, a helium tank to inflate balloons with, and a nacho cheese fountain (which June gets excited about). Though Dirk suggests splitting up, the kids decide there's still safety in numbers. After distracting and delaying a horde of zombies outside a store that sold food items using another one of Quint's gadgets, the kids quickly grab the cake ingredients and escape a Winged Wretch that was nesting there following the events of Book 3.

After escaping the Winged Wretch, the kids go after a helium balloon tank at the convenience store last seen in the pilot movie. However, they find the basement flooded and, after recharging their flashlight with new batteries, find it is home to a giant "Aqua Bite" and vine-thingies. The kids manage to defeat the Aqua Bite, and Dirk stops the vines from drowning Jack, June and Quint by using the helium tank as a melee weapon and a blowtorch. After escaping, the kids head back to what's left of their middle school to liberate the fountain from the main hall and cheese from the Home Ec classroom to create June's cheese fountain. Along the way, they run into Skaelka who explains she lost her battle ax "Shirley" while training. After promising her they'll find it, the kids encounter and then trap an Octogroot with playground equipment.

Inside the school, the kids collect the fountain and cheese bucket, while also finding Skaelka's ax and a strange red book with a glowing eye that Jack's entranced with. June and Quint convince him to leave the book alone and focus on getting the ax and the cheese out. Suddenly, more vine-thingies attack the group, but Dirk uses "Shirley" the ax to cut them free, allowing the kids to escape with a bucket full of cheese. On the drive home, June thanks Jack for helping her plan her birthday party, but the kids soon encounter the Winged Wretch, Mauler and Zombies on the road again. In the epilogue, the kids sacrifice almost all the party supplies to ward off the Mauler, the zombies, and vanquish the Winged Wretch with the helium tank. However, instead of their tree house, Jack leads the group to the sports arena, where Rover, Skaelka, Chef and the rest of their monster friends from Book 2 onwards have been waiting to surprise them. June once again thanks Jack and they even have a tender moment while the party gradually goes into full swing and Chef brings out the cake. The End... for now.

Production[]

On September 26, 2017, it was announced that Thunderbird Entertainment's animation studio Atomic Cartoons had optioned the screen rights on Max Brallier's book series The Last Kids on Earth with the intention of producing an animated television series.[6][7]

On February 26, 2018, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order. Executive producers include Brallier, Scott Peterson, Jennifer McCarron, and Matthew Berkowitz. Brallier and Peterson are also expected to write the series as well. Production companies involved in the series include Thunderbird Entertainment's animation studio Atomic Cartoons.[8][9]

On March 13, 2019, the series cast was announced, including Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O'Hara, Keith David, Bruce Campbell, Garland Whitt, Montserrat Hernandez, Charles Demers, and Nick Wolfhard as the lead character Jack Sullivan.[10]

It was initially reported that the series would be released on May 30, 2019,[11][12] but it instead premiered on September 17, 2019.[13]

Merchandise[]

Jakks Pacific launched a toyline based on the series in early 2020.[14] Outright Games will publish a video game tie-in The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom, for across consoles and PC in 2021.[15] A graphic novel, subtitled Thrilling Tales from the Tree House, is currently released as of April 6, 2021.[16]
