Critical reception[]

Dancing Astronaut staff wrote that "The Motto" contains a "catchy hook and swelling basslines" and described it as "an exercise in simplicity".[2] Gabriel Krongold of EDM Tunes stated that the song will make listeners "get lost in the beat" and "off their feet".[3] Ellie Mullins of We Rave You complimented the fusion of Max's pop sound with Tiësto's dance style, and commented that it is "more than just another dance record".[4]

Commercial performance[]

"The Motto" debuted on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart at number four on the chart dated 20 November 2021, where it was received 3,500,000 streams and 1,500 downloads in the United States.[5] It has peaked at number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song debuted at number 61 on the UK Singles Chart dated 12 November 2021, where it remained for three weeks. The song re-entered the chart after the 2021 holiday season at 37, later peaking at number 15 making it Tiësto's sixth and Max's fifth top-20 single.[6]

Music video[]

An accompanying music video was directed by Christian Breslauer and released on MTV Live and throughout Times Square.[4] It depicts Tiësto and Ava Max "traveling back in time and partying it up".[7] Set in the 1920s,[4][8][9] Max arrives in a hotel and destroys an elevator using champagne, while accompanied by an usher.[10]
