The Toxic Avenger is an upcoming American superhero comedy horror film, written and directed by Macon Blair. The film serves as a reboot and "contemporary reimagining" of the 1984 film of the same name, and the fifth installment overall in its film franchise. It is produced by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who produced the previous films in the franchise, and stars Peter Dinklage.

"When a struggling everyman is pushed into a vat of toxic waste, he is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed."[1]

On April 6, 2010, a remake of The Toxic Avenger was announced.[2] The remake, said to be aiming for a family-friendly PG-13 release similar to the Toxic Crusaders television series, is to be co-written and directed by Steve Pink.[3] On September 12, 2016, Variety reports that Conrad Vernon will direct the film with executive producers Guillermo del Toro of Double Dare You, Bob Cooper and Alex Schwartz of Storyscape Entertainment and Akiva Goldsman & Greg Lessans of Weed Road. Mike Arnold and Chris Poole are on board to rewrite the screenplay by Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell.[4] On December 10, 2018, it was announced that Legendary Pictures has won the rights to reboot The Toxic Avenger, with Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz to serve as producers.[5] In March 2019, Macon Blair was announced that he'll write and direct the upcoming reboot.[6]

Casting[]

In May 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger was in talks for a role in the film.[7] Schwarzenegger would eventually drop out to work on Terminator Genisys.[8] In November 2020, it was announced that Peter Dinklage would star in the film.[1] In April 2021, Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige were added to the cast.[9][10] In June 2021, Kevin Bacon, Julia Davis and Elijah Wood joined the cast.[11][12]

Filming[]

Principal production commenced on June 21, 2021 in Bulgaria and wrapped on August 14, 2021.[11][13][14]
