History[]

Thirunellai is a small village mainly inhabited by Brahmins or Iyers who have migrated from Thanjavur, 2 or 3 centuries before. The brahmins who settled in Thirunellai on the banks of the river nila or kannadi, where vaishnavites (devotees of Lord Vishnu). Out of the 18 gramams in Palakkad, Thirunellai and Pallipuram are settled by Vaishnavites, whereas the rest by Saivaites.

Though there is no direct proof of the time of settling in Thirunellai, it could have been a most recent when compared to the other gramams. Most probably the settling was about 200-300 years before 20th century.

Thirunellai, often known by its old name, 'Thiruvillakadavu', got its name from a small incident related to the travel of Rama during his exile, often referred to as Ramayana. It is said that Rama during his exile had traveled through river Nila, banking the village and had used his arrow(villu). So the name comes from "villu" meaning arrow and "kadavu" meaning banks of river.

The village has been a traditional centre of spiritual enhancement and religious enlightenment since its history. The Tamil accent and cultural milieu, in the present generation of people, can be seen distinctly different from that of the people of Tamil Nadu. These Brahmins of the village are held in high esteem for their expertise in Sastras, Puranas and Vedas. Many ventured on commerce, trade and agriculture and prospered. They became accountants and great businessmen.
