True Beauty (Korean: 여신강림; Hanja: 女神降臨; RR: Yeosin-gangnim;[a] lit. The Advent of a Goddess) is a South Korean television series starring Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-woo, Hwang In-youp, and Park Yoo-na. Based on the Line Webtoon of the same name by Yaongyi, it centers on a high school girl who, after being bullied and discriminated because of being perceived as ugly, masters the art of makeup to transform herself into a gorgeous "goddess".[3][4][5][6] It aired on tvN from December 9, 2020, to February 4, 2021, every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:30 (KST).[7]

Synopsis[]

18-year-old high school student Lim Ju-kyung (Moon Ga-young), who has an inferiority complex regarding her appearance, has been constantly discriminated by her family and bullied by her peers due to being perceived as ugly. She starts learning how to use makeup by binge-watching makeup tutorial videos on the Internet. When she masters the art just before transferring to her new school, her makeover proves to be transformative as she quickly rises to fame and her peers call her a "goddess".[6][3][4]

Despite her newfound popularity, Ju-kyung still considers herself ugly and it is her greatest fear that her peers will see her real face. This unfortunately comes true when her dashingly handsome, popular and mysterious classmate Lee Su-ho (Cha Eun-woo), whom she had previously run into with her bare face a couple of times, recognizes her beyond her makeup.[3] Su-ho is very popular among female students at school, but he hates being the constant center of attention and is often seen as aloof and cold. He has his own fears, and he harbors a dark secret—a tragic incident in the past—that has been haunting him for a long time. He and his former best friend Han Seo-jun (Hwang In-youp) have distanced themselves from each other because of this incident, and the blame Seo-jun placed on Su-ho has caused him a lot of guilt. Ju-kyung and the estranged friends Su-ho and Seo-jun soon forge an unlikely relationship as they unravel secrets, share their pains, grow together and seek comfort from each other.

Main[]

A student of Class 2-5 in Saebom High School who masters the art of makeup and transforms herself into a "goddess". Since childhood, Ju-kyung has been constantly discriminated by her family and bullied by her peers due to being perceived as ugly. This leads to her having an inferiority complex regarding her appearance and, worse, contemplating suicide. Eventually, she starts learning how to use makeup by binge-watching tutorial videos in the Internet. When she masters the art just before transferring to Saebom High School, her makeover proves to be transformative as she quickly rises to fame and her peers call her a "goddess". She tries her best to hide her real appearance from everyone but her classmate Su-ho, whom she had previously run into with her bare face a couple of times, later recognizes her beyond her makeup. Ju-kyung prefers reading horror comic books and listening to heavy metal music.
A student of Class 2-5 in Saebom High School; Seo-jun's former best friend. Su-ho is very popular for his dashingly handsome looks but harbors a dark secret from his past. Su-ho seems to have it all—looks, good grades, money and excellent basketball and Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills—but his dysfunctional family and a tragic incident from a year ago turns him into an ice-cold boy who hates being the center of attention. He first meets Ju-kyung at the top of a high-rise building, when she was contemplating suicide, and stops her from jumping off the building, before scolding her and lecturing her about the people she would be leaving behind. He shares Ju-kyung's penchant for horror comic books, and he sometimes runs into her inside a comic book store they both frequent. He encounters the transformed Ju-kyung at Saebom High School and soon recognizes her beyond her makeup. He later fell in love with Ju-kyung and never discriminated or shunned her despite her real looks, instead encouraging her to be braver and care less about people's opinions.
A student of Class 2-5 in Saebom High School; Su-ho's former best friend. Seo-jun is a handsome and equally-popular student at Saebom High School who, despite being a tough-looking "bad boy", is a kind, loving and soft person, especially to his mother and sister. A talented singer, he is a former idol trainee but a tragic incident a year ago leads to him abandoning his path to stardom and severing his friendship with Su-ho, with whom he has since become extremely hostile. He later fell in love with Ju-kyung and never discriminated or shunned her despite her real looks, and it added friction to his already crumbling relationship with Su-ho just when they saw a hope of reconciliation. He was also annoyed by Ju-young's romantic moves towards his younger sister, as he wanted to protect her.
A student of Class 2-5 in Saebom High School; Ju-kyung's best friend in high school and Su-ho's childhood friend, and she harbors a crush on Su-ho. Su-jin is a natural-beauty and an intelligent girl who comes from a wealthy family. She is kind and friendly, and becomes close friends with the transferee Ju-kyung at Saebom High School upon meeting her. Despite being a top student, she harbors emotional scars as she is being forced by her parents to excel at school, to the extent that she is abused by her father for only placing second in school rankings. She later finds out the true physical facial appearance of Ju-kyung, and although she agreed to keep her true face as a secret and continued to be friendly towards her, she later betrays Ju-kyung and exposes her secret to the whole school upon realising Su-ho liked Ju-kyung. Jealous and overwhelmed, she insists to Su-ho that he should like her instead because of how long they've known each other. After throwing Ju-kyung's necklace aside, she tries to kiss Su-ho only to be pushed away. Subsequently, she runs away during school hours after other students discover it was her that exposed Ju-kyung's true appearance. Embarrassed and ashamed by her actions, she and her mother leave the country (after her mother divorces her father).
