Etymology of the Tulkibas region[]

The origin and historical significance of the name of the Tulkibas region to this day remains a secret for many Turkologists and historians, while people's opinion about its origin varies widely. However, on the basis of numerous studies, it was revealed that the main name of this colonial toponym is Türkibas (in some sources of Türkbasy). Based on historical sources, a number of conclusions can be drawn regarding the name and history of this area in the southern region of Kazakhstan.

Through the course of time, the historical name of the area Türkibas among the people began to be called Tulkibas, due to the fact that in the Kazakh language the sounds "r" and "l" often replaced each other due to the similarity of syllables, contributing to the sound change of words. For example, just as in the Kazakh version of the word “Muslim”, the name “Türkibas” had a sound change to “Tulkibas”.

The name “Türki-bass” consists of two words “Türk” and “Bass”, which means “the head of the spiritual clan of the Türks”. This name refers to a number of ethnotoponyms based on the Turkic tribes that inhabited the territory of Kazakhstan in the period of the VI-XIII centuries. The reason for the name of the region may also be related to the words of Mahmutkhan-Sheikh Baba: "I will go to the heights of the Turkish people." Even if we look at the direct meaning of this name, images of ancient Turkic tribes appear before our eyes instead of the head of a fox. Even among people of this area, there are no stories, legends, or tales about the foxes. The same opinion is shared by the Kazakh writer of literature, as well as a native of the Tyulkubas region, Markhabat Baygut. In addition, orientalist V.V. Bartold in his work "Journey to Central Asia of 1893 also suggests that the name "Turkibas" in common parlance has become "Tulkibas".

The traditional Kyrgyz epic "Manas" is also considered as evidence for the name of the Turkibasy area since this epic tells about the interaction of the Kyrgyz with the Turkic and Chinese nations. The following lines in this epic seem to indicate the truth about the name of the Türkibasy region: « Қазақ, қырғыз бірікті, Қытайлардың соры екен. Алты жүз мың қол болып, Арада Қытай қамалып, Бұрынғы аты Жылан су, Түрікоғлы түмен барғаны. Бас қосты бәрі түрік деп, Жыланды аты жоғалып, Түркібас атқы қалғаны. Түркібас аты өшіпті, Қазіргі ақыр заманда, Түлібас атқа көшіпті». By going through these lines and understanding the meaning of these words, one cannot but agree with the conclusion that the real name of the Tulkibas region is “Türkbasy”. Nowadays, in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated November 20, 2018, No. 782, according to the project, it is being considered to return the Tyulkubas district of its historical name Türkibasy.
