Twitter Blue

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Twitter Blue is a subscription version of the microblogging and social networking service Twitter. The service, launched in June 2021, adds extra features to a user's Twitter account for a monthly subscription. It is the company's first attempt at launching a subscription service. The extra features available through the service include an undo facility that allows users to set a time delay before posts, known as tweets, are published, thus enabling them to edit and correct content before it is made public. Twitter Blue was launched in Australia and Canada on 3 June 2021, with plans to introduce it to other countries. The company said its reasons for the limited launch were to "gain a deeper understanding" of what customers are looking for".[1][2]

On 28 May 2021, The Guardian reported that Twitter Blue had been listed on Apple's App Store as an in-app purchase, its presence having been discovered by independent researcher , who unearths new apps before they are officially announced. Wong told Money Magazine that the move was likely a response to Apple’s movement towards tracking transparency.[3] Rumours about a Twitter subscription service had circulated in the technology world for several months before that.[4]

Upon its launch the monthly fee for Twitter Blue was set at $C3.49 for Canadian users and $A4.49 for subscribers in Australia.[5] The Guardian reported that in the UK and US it was listed on the App Store as £2.49 and $2.99 respectively, though at that time Twitter had not announced a date for its launch in those countries.[4] As well as the undo option, among other features to be included are a bookmark facility enabling better organisation of saved tweets and a reader mode that converts long threads into easier-to-manage text.[2]

On November 9th, 2021, Twitter Blue was launched in the United States and New Zealand with the added feature of ad-free articles.[6]
