Vancouver Waldorf School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vancouver Waldorf School is a private Waldorf school with preschool, kindergarten and grades 1 to 12.[1][2] The main office and grade school are located at 2725 St Christophers Road in North Vancouver, British Columbia. It has a high school at a separate location in Edgemont Village. The curriculum includes an emphasis on experiential learning.[2]

The school is a member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.[3]

Early Childhood Programs

Teachers at the Vancouver Waldorf School's Early Childhood Center strive to provide an environment worthy of imitation, where children can play imaginatively and creatively. Teachers aim to provide young students with a world of beauty that will nurture their sense of ease, joy and peace. Teachers work with a very regular rhythm for daily and weekly activities. Programs are offered for children three to six-and-a-half years of age.

Grade School

In the grade school, teachers introduce skills, subjects and concepts at a time that is appropriate to the child's physiological, psychological and emotional development. The class teacher stays with the class to teach the core curriculum, while specialty teachers provide instruction in areas such as music, French, physical education and movement, and handwork. Rather than teaching students a "set of facts" they will need for high school, each child is encouraged to develop a set of skills learned in relationship to their individual experience.

High School

The interdisciplinary curriculum aims to develop the students' capacities for critical, independent thinking while respecting and nurturing their emerging individualities. Upon successful completion of the High School curriculum, students are awarded a Vancouver Waldorf High School Certificate and a Dogwood Diploma, the British Columbia School Completion Certificate, provided they have met the graduation requirements. The Vancouver Waldorf High School offers and international Waldorf Student Exchange program for students in Grades 10 and 11. Students have completed exchanges to other Waldorf schools in England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Brazil and Australia.
