ViuTVsix is a free-to-air English language general entertainment television channel in Hong Kong operated by HK Television Entertainment (HKTVE), whose parent company, PCCW, also operates IPTV platform Now TV and media streaming service Viu.[1] The channel offers 17 hours of English programming a day including news and public affairs, lifestyle shows, non-Hong Kong television series and documentaries.[2]

Unlike its sister channel ViuTV, ViuTVsix does not provide online streaming on a daily basis, because of the copyright issue. However, exceptions were made for live events like One Love Manchester, Hong Kong Sevens and Sing! China.

History

Pre-launch

In 2015, HKTVE was granted a 12-year free-to-air television broadcast licence by the Hong Kong Government. Under the regulation of the licence, HKTVE must provide a 16-hour English channel by 31 March 2017.[3] HKTVE was originally planned to launch a 17-hour English channel in the format of SDTV.[4][5]

On 11 October 2016, HKTVE revealed the channel name ViuTVsix and announced 31 March 2017 as its actual launch date on their 2017 programme showcase, namely ViuTV 2017.[1]

Programming

ViuTVsix, as a general entertainment channel, broadcast 17 hours of a wide variety of programmes from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on the next day. The channel mainly broadcasts news programme, imported television series, factual television and documentary. Some sports events and music programmes, such as Hong Kong Sevens and BBC Music Awards, are also covered by the channel.[6]

Children's programmes start in the afternoon every day with mostly imported animated series, such as The Day My Butt Went Psycho!, G.I. Joe: Renegades, Kaijudo, Sidekick, Transformers: Rescue Bots and Tree Fu Tom.

News, politics and finance

Unlike Cantonese counterpart ViuTV, Now TV's news division does not provide any news bulletin on ViuTVsix. The channel's daily news programme ViuTV News and current affairs show Weekly Re-Viu are produced by Reuters from its studio in Hong Kong. ViuTVsix also relays English language news programmes from other broadcasters, including Al Jazeera News Live, CNN Newsroom, CNN News Stream, DW News, NHK Newsline and ABC's 20/20.[7]
