Wansbeck Road is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburbs of Coxlodge and Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear, England. It joined the network on 10 May 1981, following the opening of the second phase of the network, between South Gosforth and Bank Foot.

History[]

The line opened in June 1905, as part of the Ponteland and Darras Hall branch of the Blyth and Tyne Railway. Wansbeck Road is situated between the former Coxlodge and West Gosforth stations. The line closed to passengers in June 1929, with Coxlodge and West Gosforth stations closing to goods in November 1965 and August 1967 respectively.[2][3]

Wansbeck Road is built on an embankment above Wansbeck Road, with platforms located on opposite sides of the road. A second concrete span was added to the original single-track bridge in the late 1970s, during the construction of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The station is also located near to the point where the Ponteland and Darras Hall branch crossed over the former Fawdon Wagonway, which operated between 1818 and 1826.

In 2018, the station, along with others on the Airport branch, were refurbished as part of the Metro: All Change programme. The project saw improvements to accessibility, security and energy efficiency, as well as the re-branding of the station to the new black and white corporate colour scheme.[4]

The station was used by 166,282 passengers in 2017–18, making it the sixth-least-used station on the network.

Facilities[]

Step-free access is available at all stations across the Tyne and Wear Metro network, with ramped access to both platforms at Wansbeck Road. The station is equipped with ticket machines, waiting shelter, seating, next train information displays, timetable posters, and an emergency help point on both platforms. Ticket machines are able to accept payment with credit and debit card (including contactless payment), notes and coins.[5][6] The station is also fitted with smartcard validators, which feature at all stations across the network.[7][8]

There is no dedicated car parking available at the station. There is the provision for cycle parking, with 3 cycle pods available for use.[9]

Services[]

As of April 2021, the station is served by up to five trains per hour on weekdays and Saturday, and up to four trains per hour during the evening and on Sunday.[10]
