Reception[]

Critical response[]

The "Anti-Semitism" scenario from episode 2 gained positive reviews from critics. Carrie Keating, professor of psychology at Colgate University, pointed out that during the scenario, more non-Jewish people confronted the racist cashier than Jewish bystanders. She explained this was because of the black sheep effect, which caused non-Jewish people to become more likely to intervene since the cashier was depicting non-Jewish people in a bad light.[3] In another interview after the "Pregnant Drinker" scenario from episode 6, Carrie explained that fewer people attempted to intervene because, "Most of us don't want to rock the social boat, and I think also when a woman is pregnant -- that's her baby, that's that bubble around the family, and that family privacy is a value we all have and we don't like to disrupt that."[46]

Notes[]

  1. ^ On December 10, 2010, one week before the episode aired, ABC announced that they were allowing viewers to vote on their favorite scenarios, for the chance of having them included in the episode. Though that makes this episode a collection of reruns, ABC counted it as its own episode.[24]
  2. ^ On December 17, 2010, ABC News announced a contest allowing viewers to come up with their own ideas for WWYD? scenarios, for the chance of having them made and presented on the show, and for a paid roundtrip airfare for two to New York.[32] Three contestants won the grand prize (Jared Smith, Casey Hubelbank, and Amy Saffell) while two contestants (Damen Sterling and Jonathan Gilsdorf) only won the small prize of having their scenario on the show.[33]
