"When You Tell Me That You Love Me" is a 1991 song by American soul singer Diana Ross. The song was written by Albert Hammond and John Bettis, and produced by Peter Asher. The song was subsequently covered by various artists.

"When You Tell Me That You Love Me" was released as the lead single on August 20, 1991, from Diana Ross's 1991 album The Force Behind the Power released on the Motown label in the US and by EMI in the UK. The song, a sentimental ballad, was the album's biggest hit, peaking at number thirty-seven on the US Billboard R&B singles chart while peaking at number-two on the UK Singles Chart. Ross considers it one of her signature songs.[1] The UK release included her 1985 hit "Chain Reaction".[2]

It missed the UK Christmas number one spot for 1991 by a couple of hundred units, beaten out by the re-release of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" commemorating the passing of lead singer, Freddie Mercury. The single was awarded a Silver Disc for UK sales exceeding 200,000 copies.

Critical reception[]

Larry Flick from Billboard commented, "First offering from legendary vocalist's new "The Force Behind The Power" album is a dramatically produced power ballad. Gratefully, track is less trend-conscious than Ross' more recent efforts, though this is far from her strongest work. Regardless, diehard fans will love it—as will AC radio programmers."[3] Cashbox called it a "highly commercial pop ballad" and a "slick single".[4] The magazine also stated that it's a "potential hit" and a "dramatic ballad".[5] Liverpool Echo wrote, "And while Diana Ross's voice couldn't be more different, this track does have some of that radio-friendly style." They added further, "It starts like a sophisticated ballad, with quiet piano and voice. and builds into an emotional climax, complete with a bit of rock guitar. It's perfectly produced and perfectly predictable."[6] Newcastle Evening Chronicle noted that on "When You Tell Me That You Love Me", the singer is "in romantic mood".[7]

Music video[]

The single's music video featured scenes of Ross in an evening gown singing on stage intercut with home video footage of Ross with her two sons Ross & Evan.[8]
