Ismael José Prego Botana (born October 5, 1993), better known as Wismichu, is a Spanish YouTuber. His videos consist mostly of satirical video blogs, often characterized by a critical tone and a dark style of humour.

Biography

Ismael José Prego Botana[2] was born in A Coruña, a port city located in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain on October 5, 1993,[3] Wismichu he moved to Madrid, living there until 2016,[4] in addition studied Audiovisual Communication at the Rey Juan Carlos I University.[5] In 2008 he began uploading videos to YouTube, initially gameplays. Nowadays, his videos often consist of videoblogs, prank videos, and parody videos, mostly infused with an absurdist and dark style of humour, often comparable to TV series Rick and Morty or the Deadpool comic series. Prego has stated that the origin of his YouTube user name is a version of his name "Isma," short for Ismael, with his friends often calling him "Wisma".[6]

According to Prego, he initially wanted his YouTube name to be "Wisma," but at the time YouTube did not allow names of only 5 characters, so he made the name longer into Wismichu.[7] In 2014 he had a cameo in the comedy crime film Torrente 5: Operación Eurovegas,[8] he has also performed live shows across Spain, often with fellow YouTuber AuronPlay.[9] In June 2016 he published his first book Si te rindes, pierdes,[10] and in 2017 he published his first comic Norman y Mix.[11] On 12 September 2018 he announced that the shooting of his first movie, named Bocadillo starring fellow YouTubers Joaquín Albero (JoaquínPA), David Cajal (Kajal Napalm) and María Rubio (Miare's Project).[12] It was released at the Sitges Film Festival.[13] The trailer triumphed in views on YouTube but it received mixed reviews.[14]

On his release, the film received bad reviews,[15] it was defined as a prank and he laughed at the press and the audience.[16] On 17 October 2018 was revealed he was working on a documentary film directed by Carlo Padial,[17][18] and Bocadillo was a section of the documentary.[19] His trailer was released on 10 March 2019.[20] and the film titled "Vosotros soís mi película" was released in Flooxer on 31 March 2019.[21] From November 2018 he presents a podcast series with Kajal and Joaquín named W-Podcast where they interview contestants.[22] In 2019 he published his sequel of Norman y Mix called Norman y Mix 2: Hazte villano.[23]

Personal life

Since October 2013, Prego lived and dated his girlfriend Ingrid,[24] whose relationship ended in mid-2019,[25] he currently maintains a relationship with Miare[26] and lives in Barcelona, Spain.[27] Isma is outspoken about his choice to be a vegan for ethical reasons.[28]

Controversies

Wismichu during his career had several controversies, an example was: in 2015, when the Wismichu channel was shut down for several days after being reported and flagged for having "explicit sexual content." A petition on Change.org amassed over 21,000 online signatures in favor of reinstating the Wismichu channel, and it was ultimately restored.[4] Other example was: in 2018 when he appeared in the Movistar+ TV show La Resistencia, hosted by David Broncano.[29] It was defined as the worst interview[30] due he broke a cup on his own accord and then run away from the set.[31] Later Ismael apologized to both the program and the public, stating that "he wanted to make a nod to when Ignatius broke cups in the 1st season."[32]

Hay un Wismichu en Mi (There is a Wismichu in Me)

In May 2016, while Wismichu was on his "Hay un Wismichu en mí" tour (a parody of the title given to the song You've Got a Friend in Me in Spain), multiple news outlets claimed that the show was incredibly offensive and inappropriate and alleged that he even "Called little girls in the audience whores, and invited them to the stage to suck him off." All of this was proven false by his audience and a video of his own, plus the fact that he gave almost 200 shows and no such complaint surfaced during any of those.[33]

Jolly call to a logging company

In September 2016, Wismichu and fellow YouTuber Auronplay made a prank call to a lumber business, asking for firewood to burn down their school. A lumber company in Andalucia appeared on a news program run by Spain's Canal Sur a few days later, stating that they had filed a police report about the incident because it had negatively impacted their business. The lumber company, which according to Wismichu was not the company called in the prank video, complained of receiving a high number of prank calls after the video was uploaded, which company spokesperson said "ruined" their business.[33]

Complaint by Álvaro Ojeda

In September 2016 Álvaro Ojeda Sacaluga, a controversial reporter and YouTuber known for his often far right-leaning comments and controversial statements filed a police report against Wismichu after Wismichu jokingly claimed that he was "coming for Alvaro Ojeda" while cocking an airsoft handgun. He jokingly made it seem like he was going to murder Ojeda in his "Pokemania" video, in a segment mocking a video by Alvaro Ojeda where he called fans of the Pokémon Go app "virgins" while stating they should "stop looking at the phone and go at the beach to masturbate at scantily clad women in there". Ojeda claimed that this made him fear for his life and physical safety.[34] The report was dropped by police because it was not classified as a threat.[35]

Case of the Botellazo

In October 2017, Wismichu was denounced for attacking a 21-year-old young man with a bottle of beer in the early morning of September 30,[36] according to one of the complainant male's female companions: Everything happened after six in the morning on Saturday, in the apartment that the victim shared with two girls from the Mestre Mateo square in Coruña. Ismael Prego and two other friends were invited to the house by one of the young female tenants. Wismichu together with the complainant began to discuss about the conflict in Catalonia and the figure of The King of Spain, after a good time of discussion, the tenants of the apartment decided to evict Ismael from the house together to your friends. Faced with this situation, Wismichu "who was sitting in the living room at the time," took a bottle of beer and "hit the complainant three times" on the head, according to the complaint filed with the National Police.[37]

On September 9, 2017, a female friend of the victim posted several tweets stating that,[38] "Friends told him what are you doing? While he hit my companion with his head open," says one of the female tenants of the flat, "Before leaving, he spat at him and ran like a coward" continued the young woman who made the case public, along with some images of the shirt and the floor full of blood. After what happened, the attacked young man went to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with an occipital laceration and contusion, so they had to put five staples in his head, along with some stitches. At 9:00 a.m., he went to the offices of the National Police to file a complaint against Ismael Prego. On the recommendation of his lawyer, the young man did not want to make any statements in this regard.[39]

Later Wismichu uploaded a video to his secondary channel titled «No hagáis lo que yo» (Don't do what i did) (video that is currently not available), in which although he admits to having committed the act. Defends himself by stating that the Botellazo was in self-defense, stating that when the guy looked at him, he said "what the hell is this clown doing in my house". After the discussion talking about the Referendum of Catalonia, the young man he attacked "went crazy", and although Wismichu tried to reason with him, there was no way. The tone of the discussion rose too high to the point where the complainant grabbed him and tried to throw him out of his house while saying: «Either you leave my fucking house or I'll break your fucking head.»[37] «At that moment I remembered the fascist attacks that have been taking place lately here in Catalonia and I shit with fear and, since the guy was holding me, I could not think of anything else to give him with the only thing I had in the hand, it was a bottle».[40]

Conflicts with Dalas Review (2017-2021)

In October, 2017, Ismael uploaded the video "Así es Dalas Review" (which in turn is the most popular video on his Wismi2 channel), in that video he referred to Dalas as "fucking psychopath", "unfortunate", "bastard", and "bad person". Later in 2018, the YouTuber Dalas Review denounced him for the crime of libel and slander, a complaint for which Wismichu came out innocent.[41]

Later in 2021, Spanish YouTuber Dalas Review upload a video stating that he had access to Wismichu's criminal record after denouncing him for the crime of slander and libel, in addition to relating things about the conviction he had for the bottle-hitting case. He states that he has at his disposal some leaked audios of Ingrid leaving Ismael Prego as an abuser, he also accuses Wismichu of committing acts of pedophilia on the Chatroulette page, asking to show mainly their breasts to his alleged victims.[42]

Complaint for child pornography

On the afternoon of July 5, 2021, Hugo Pereira, a journalist from EDATV.com announced through Twitter, the complaint against Ismael Prego for the alleged crime of Child pornography,[43] according to Hugo Pereira: Ismael used the Chatroulette website to record alleged minors showing their intimate parts, mainly their breasts, to later publish uncensored on his site "wismichu.net". Among all the alleged victims of him, which were one of eleven and another of twelve, who are the main object of the lawsuit.[44] Pereira later on EDATV.com and Estado de Alarma TV revealed parts of the complaint, after this, the Spanish YouTuber Dalas Review said through Twitter that: «No one should turn it into a "Dalas vs Wismichu", support the eleven and twelve year old victims that the Wismichu offender filmed in Chatroulette and have their measures taken».[45]
