Yangmingshan National Park is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan, located between Taipei and New Taipei City. The districts that house parts of the park grounds include Taipei's Beitou and Shilin Districts; and New Taipei's Wanli, Jinshan and Sanzhi Districts. The national park is known for its cherry blossoms, hot springs, sulfur deposits, fumaroles, venomous snakes, and hiking trails, including Taiwan's tallest dormant volcano, Qixing (Seven Star) Mountain (1,120 m).

History[]

This mountain range was originally called "Grass Mountain" (Chinese: 草山; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chháu-soaⁿ) during the Qing Dynasty, in reference to the Datun Mountain (大屯山; Tōa-tūn-soaⁿ).[2] Officials during this period were worried about thieves stealing sulfur from the rich sulfur deposits in the area, so they would regularly set fire to the mountain. Thus, only grass and no trees could be seen.

Daiton National Park [ja], Taiwan's first national park, was established on 27 December 1937.[3] It was one of three national parks designated by Governor-General of Taiwan Seizō Kobayashi during Japanese rule.

In 1950, President Chiang Kai-shek renamed Grass Mountain to Yangmingshan to commemorate the Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming.[2][4] In 1962, the then Taiwan Provincial Bureau of Public Works began to plan the Yangmingshan National Park. The initial planning area was 28,400 hectares, including Mount Kwan-in and the Tatun Volcano Group.

Landscape and geology[]

Different from the high mountain national parks, Yangmingshan National Park has a lower elevation. Even though mountain elevations range from only 200–1120 meters, beautiful landscapes such as ridges, valleys, lakes, waterfalls and basins are abundant. Andesite rocks make up most of the area's geology.[5]

Xiaoyoukeng[]

Xiaoyoukeng is a post-volcanic geological landscape area located in the north of Taiwan in Yangmingshan National Park[6] at the northwestern foot of Seven Star Mountain. It is approximately 805 meters above sea level and is famed for the fumaroles, sulfur crystals, hot springs and spectacular 'landslide terrain' formed by post-volcanic activity.

Hiking trails to Seven Star Mountain are accessible from the Xiaoyoukeng parking lot. The top of the trail is 1,120 meters above sea level, which is the highest peak of Taipei City. The Xiaoyoukeng trail can connect to Qixing Park, Menghuan Pond, and Lengshuikeng. The trail also connects to visitor center, Yangmingshan Second Parking Lot and the Yangmingshan Bus Station.[7]

Flora and fauna[]

Due to the effects of post-volcanic activity and precipitation, soil in the region is highly acidic. With the influence of the northeast monsoon and the area's microclimates, winter temperatures are much lower than the surrounding areas.[8] The above factors cause the vegetation to differ from those in other regions at the same latitude. Some medium and high altitude plants can be found here such as bird-lime tree and hairy Japanese maple. Vegetation groups can be divided into subtropical monsoon rain forests, temperate evergreen broadleaf forests and mountain ridge grasslands. There are 1360 species of vascular bundle plants in the region.[9] Some of the common ones are red nanmu, large-leaved machilus, Formosan sweet gum, Taiwan cherry, Mori cleyera and dark spotted cherry. The most famous is Taiwan isoetes in Menghuan pond, an aquatic fern only found in Taiwan. Mt. Datun is one of the most well known places to see some of the 168 species of butterflies in northern Taiwan. The best time to view the butterflies is from May to August. The most common ones are from the families Papilionidae, Danainae and Nymphalidae. There are also 122 species of birds in the region.[10] Semi-feral cattle are one of notable attractions in the area.[11]

Historical and cultural sites[]

Chinese Culture University[12][]

The school was founded in 1962. The founder Dr. Zhang Qiyun and the Chinese Culture Foundation Committee originally proposed the school to be called "Far Eastern University". After a letter from the previous President Jiang Gong, he suggested that it be changed to "Chinese Cultural Institute". In 1963, 15 departments of the day department of the University Department began to enroll students, and then 4 departments of the night department were established and renamed "Chinese Culture College". Later, due to the success in running the school, it was approved by the Ministry of Education in 1980 to be upgraded to "Chinese Culture University."

Chung-Shan Building - Meeting place of the now defunct National Assembly of the Republic of China[13][]

During the administration of President Chiang Kai-shek, the Chung-Shan Building in Yangmingshan National Park was built in 1965 to honor the centenary birthday of Sun Yat-sen, the country's founding father. Ms. Xiu Zelan, a well-known architect, designed it. It is surrounded by mountains and is surrounded by flora. The exterior is a typical Chinese classical structure with exquisite and precise interior décor. It was once the home of the National Assembly and a popular location for heads of state to entertain foreign visitors and organize state banquets. It has since been recognized as a municipal monument, and the space is available for rental and guided tours. It is a historically significant structure.

Grass Mountain Chateau - Summer residence of Chiang Kai-shek[14][]

Grass Mountain is a valley area surrounded by Datun Mountain, Qixing Mountain, and Shamao Mountain, but it is not a mountain. The Grass Mountain Hotel was formerly the guest home of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, and Jiang Gong moved in when the Nationalist Government moved to Taiwan in 1949. The hotel is positioned on a strategic high point of a grassy mountain and is quiet and pleasant. In front of you, the Keelung River and the Danshui River meet. The natural splendor may be seen from the Guandu Plain, Shezi Island, and Guanyin Mountain. The name "Caoshan" was changed to "Yangmingshan" in the 39th year of the Republic of China (1950), in honor of Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming.

Guangfu Building - Built in 1971 in Northern Chinese palace style architecture to commemorate the Xinhai Revolution.[15][16][]

Xinhai Guangfu Building, one of Yangming Park's icons, is a stunning two-story Chinese-style building concealed in the lush woods. It was created to commemorate the Xinhai Uprising in the Republic of China's 60th year. It is situated at Yangmingshan Park's heart. It is a popular resting spot and an excellent vantage point for viewing the Taipei Basin. Koi of various hues are bred in the front pool. The upstairs terrace is a popular spot for kids to feed the fish. The old, solemn, and magnificent Chinese style design of carved beams and painted buildings contains many allusions and cleverness. In Guangfu Building, there is a souvenir shop. The Guangfu Building is surrounded by areas of brilliant cherry blossoms during the blooming season. It's a lovely experience to walk beneath the corridor and admire the flowers while watching the clouds and flowers move.

The Lin Yutang House[17][]

The "Lin Yutang House" is situated on Yangming Mountain's hillside. It was built in the Republic of China's 55th year, and it was designed by Mr. Yutang himself. In the last ten years of his life, Mr. Yutang settled in Taiwan at this address. The structure is based on a Chinese courtyard house architectural model, with a Spanish design orientation, Eastern and Western styles, and a blend of contemporary and historical elegance. The blue glazed tiles complement the white powder wall, which is adorned with deep purple circular window lattices.

Yangmingshuwu - Former Kuomintang Party Archives[18][]

On the lava flow platform of Qixing Mountain, the highest summit of the Datun Volcano Group, and on Zhongxing Road near Zhuzi Lake, Yangmingshuwu is located. With a total area of around 15 hectares, it was once known as Zhongxing Hotel. The public can spend roughly 2 hours winding up the slope by the floral clock in Yangming Garden.

Yangmingshan American Military Housing[19][]

The Yangmingshan American Military Housing is located near to Chinese Culture University in the US military dormitory complex. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was a popular gathering spot for US military personnel stationed in Taiwan and their families. It was formerly the location of the Yangmingshan Association's former headquarters.

Taipei European School[20][]

The Taipei European School (TES) comprises four branches: the German Department, the British Department, the French Department, and the High School Department. It was founded in the 1990s. Taipei European School is a non-profit collaboration led by Dr. Allan Weston, with German, British, French, and high school principals as well as finance and asset management. For many years, Taipei European School has been dedicated to providing the greatest educational environment possible for children of international business and cultural exchanges in Taiwan. At the moment, Taipei European School has 1,100 foreign students and 240 faculty members from more than 60 nations.

Tomb of Yu Youren[21][]

Yu Youren's Tomb is the burial site of Yu Youren, the former Dean of the Republic of China's Supervisory Office. Yangmingshan National Park is home to it. The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the New Taipei City Government classified it as a historic landmark in New Taipei City on April 24, 2012.

Wuchih Mountain Military Cemetery[22][]

It is the most technologically modern and gorgeous National Army Cemetery in the country, as well as the cleanest. The cemetery is split into special honor areas, general areas, lieutenant general areas, major general areas, colonel campuses, medium and major campus areas, lieutenant areas, non-commissioned officer areas, and soldier areas, according to military rank. A total of 9417 acupuncture points are located in the front and back of the body. Tourists can instead visit this side as a general attraction because the well-planned and specially-maintained cemetery lacks the sensation of sadness and gloom.
