Yir'on (Hebrew: יִרְאוֹן‎) is a kibbutz in the Galilee Panhandle in northern Israel. Located adjacent to the Lebanese border, it falls under the jurisdiction of Upper Galilee Regional Council. In 2019 it had a population of 404.[1]

History[]

The village was established on 20 May 1949 by former members of the Palmach's Yiftach Brigade and graduates of the Dror-HeHalutz youth movement on the site of the depopulated Palestinian village of Saliha.[2][3][4]

Ada Feinberg-Sireni, later a member of the Knesset, was amongst the founders. It was one of a series of villages established along the Lebanese border, with the intention of reinforcing the young state's borders. It was named after a biblical village of the Naftali tribe (Joshua 19:38), situated in this area.

Income Sources[]

After the first few challenging years, the agricultural settlement of Yir'on developed various income sources that led to economic growth. The main income source is the factory Paskal Technologies, Ltd (פסקל טכנולוגיות בע"מ) that operates in the industrial area in the city of Ma'alot-Tarshiha. More sources of income include the zipper factory Paskal Zippers (פסקל רוכסנים בע"מ), branches of field crops, orchards growing, among other things, apples, pears, cherries, and kiwis, and a furniture factory called Yir'on Furniture (רהיטי יראון), which specializes in ready-to-assemble furniture.

The tourist branch in the kibbutz includes a petting zoo surrounding a small natural lake.[5] Animals such as red deer, spotted deer, rabbits, and chickens roam around freely. Yir'on also contains 38 guest houses for tourists.

In the year 2000 the Harei Hagalil Winery was established in partnership with the Ramat HaGolan Winery. The winery is said to combine a traditional perception of the wine industry with high-tech innovation. The high-quality wine is created from vineyards planted in the Galilee Mountains and has been awarded in wine competitions in Israel and around the world.[6]
