The 1939–40 season was Real Madrid Club de Fútbol's 37th season in existence and the club's 8th consecutive season in the top flight of Spanish football.

Summary[]

After three suspended League seasons due to Spanish Civil War,[1] the Board appointed Paco Bru from Girona FC as head coach[2] In League the club finished on 4th spot below Champions Athletic Aviación.[3] Striker Sabino Barinaga[4] could play just two matches due to an injury. Offensively the team played in a superb way during the season with Manuel Alday scoring 17 league goals,[5] however, the defensive line was one of the worst of the championship sinking the chances for a title.

Meanwhile, in Copa del Generalísimo the squad could reach the Final stage and was defeated by Español after extra time.[6]
