Independents gained a majority of the seats, securing them control of the council

Elections to the Cathness District Council took place in May 1988, alongside elections to the councils of Scotland's various other districts. The number of seats and the total vote share won by each party is listed below.[1]

  Independent: 10 seats, 92.5%
  Labour: 2 seats, 7.5%
  Independent Liberal: 1 seat, 0.0%[a]

Voter turnout was 45.1%.
