  • 8 January
    • State Minister of Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products Dayasiri Jayasekara has tested positive for COVID-19.[3]
    • The Fall Army Worm, locally dubbed the Sena caterpillar, that has threatened the existence of cultivations in the country has spread across eight provinces which destroyed corn, pumpkin, bean and radish cultivations.[4]
  • 10 January
    • Cabinet Minister Rauff Hakeem has tested positive for the coronavirus.[5]
    • A disease is spreading among cattle across several villages in the Rambawa Divisional Secretariat.[6]
  • 11 January

    • Dr. Gayan Danthanarayana attached to the Ragama Teaching Hospital died after developing COVID-19 complications. He is the first Sri Lankan doctor actively engaged in COVID-19 treatments to fall victim to COVID-19.[23]
    • Tamil Nadu Q branch sleuths arrested a notorious Sri Lankan drug lord Sinnaiya Gunasekaram aka Kimbula Ela Guna, who had links with LTTE, from Chennai airport.[24]
    • Former Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara has tested positive for COVID-19.[25]
    • Governor of the Southern Province Dr. Willy Gamage tested positive for COVID-19.[26]
  • 3 February – Sri Lanka cricket head coach Mickey Arthur and international cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne have tested positive for COVID-19.[27]

  • 1 March
    • The G. C. E. Ordinary Level examination commenced across 4513 examination centers across the island with 622,351 private candidates and school students under strict health measures.[37]
    • A decapitated body of a woman was discovered inside a large traveling bag left unattended at Gas Works Junction in Dam Street, Colombo.[38] Later, the victim was identified as a 30-year-old resident from Theppanwa of the Kuruvita Police area. When the police investigations took place, perpetrator of the murder was identified as a Sub-Inspector who was attached to the Buttala Police; and he committed suicide.[39]
  • 2 March – Iranaitivu was identified as a site to bury COVID-19 deaths.[40]
  • 3 March – International cricketer Akila Dananjaya became the first bowler to take hat-trick and be hit for the maximum of six sixes in an over in the same match, against the West Indies.[41]
  • 4 March – Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine became the 16th National University of Sri Lanka with the official launch by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.[42]

  • 12 March
    • The South African variant (B.1.351) of COVID-19 was discovered for the first time in Sri Lanka from a returnee from Tanzania.[45]
    • The Department of National Botanic Gardens has added three new plant species that are at the risk of extinction in Sri Lanka to the National Red List of 2020. The three plants are: Rinorea bengalensis, Rinorea decora and Crudia zeylanica.[46]
  • 15 March – Sarath Weerasekara Minister of Public Security announced plans to Ban the Burka in Sri Lanka and the closure of more than 1,000 Islamic schools over ‘national security’ fears.[47][48][49][50]
  • 26 March – The Consumer Affairs Authority has decided to test the quality of coconut oil available in the local market due to possible aflatoxin composition.[51]
  • 31 March – A new television channel named ‘Haritha TV’ was launched by the Sri Jinarathana Educational Institute of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple.[52]

  • 4 April – The Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021 pageant held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre concluded in a melee after the reigning Mrs. World Caroline Jurie stripped the winner Pushpika De Silva of her crown.[53]
  • 5 April – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had ordered to immediately suspend Palm Oil imports to Sri Lanka.[54]
  • 6 April – Naufer Maulavi was identified as the mastermind of the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings.[55]
  • 8 April – Mrs. World Caroline Jurie and Model Chula Padmendra were arrested by the Cinnamon Garden Police on three separate counts after Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021 controversy.[56]

    • Ajith Mannapperuma sworn as a Member of Parliament in the presence of the Speaker, replacing Ranjan Ramanayake.[57]
    • The Police Special Task Force arrested wanted 44-year-old drug peddler Sarath Kumara alias “Cheaty”, while he was in hiding in a bunker at a house in Mulleriyawa.[58]
  • 10 April – The ‘Blue Beach Island Underwater Gallery’ at Nilwella beach was declared open.[59]
  • 11 April – Sri Lanka Airforce Swimmer Leading Aircraftman Roshan Abeysundara set a new Asian record by swimming 59 kilometers and 300 meters across the Palk Strait in 28 hours, 19 min 43 seconds.[60] Later, he was promoted from Leading Aircraftman to Corporal of the Sri Lanka Air Force with effect from 15 April 2021.[61]

    • Three international cricketers: Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella found in the Durham marketplace breaching bio bubble during the England tour.[127][128] They were suspended from the remainder of the tour and flown back to Sri Lanka, with immediate effect.[129][130] On 31 July 2021, the trio were suspended from international cricket for a year and fined 10 million rupees (USD 50,000 approx), and not allowed to play domestic cricket for six months.[131]

    • A 16 year old girl named Jude Kumar Ishalini from Diagama West in Agarapathana, died of serious burn injuries at former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s residence. She employed as a domestic aide at the residence of Bathiudeen, who had received serious burn injuries on July 3 and later died on July 15 at the hospital.[144] On 23 July, Sri Lanka Police arrested the wife of Rishad Bathiudeen, the Ex-Minister’s father-in-law and another person over the death.[145] Then on 24 July, Sri Lankan Court has granted permission to Sri Lanka Police to detain for 48 hours and interrogate 04 suspects in connection to the death of girl and the rape of another female within the same premises.[146] Meanwhile, child trafficker identified as Ponnaiah Bandaram alias Shankar and brother-in-law of Ex-Minister Bathiudeen was also arrested. On 25 July, statements were recorded from 35 people about the death.[147]

    • Incarcerated former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake has tested positive for COVID-19 where he is being treated at the COVID-19 Treatment Center at the Angunukolapelessa Prison.[175]

  • 7 August
    • Popular actor and director Giriraj Kaushalya, actor Niroshan Wijesinghe, teledrama directors Sudath Rohana, Shirley P. Delankawala and the screenwriter and author Mahinda Prasad Masimbula have been tested positive for COVID-19.[177][168][178][179]
  • 8 August - Total number of COVID-19 death toll in Sri Lanka surpassed 5200 where the daily fatalities count surpassed 100 for the first time.[180] In the next two days, more than 100 deaths were recorded consecutively (118 victims on 9th;[181] 124 victims on 10th;[182]).
  • 11 August - The total number of COVID-19 recoveries in Sri Lanka surpassed the 300,000.[183]
  • 13 August - Former Minister, Mangala Samaraweera was hospitalized after being infected with the COVID-19 on 11th August.[184][185] On 16th August, his condition worsened and moved to ICU.[186] However, he later died on 24th August at the age of 65.[187]
  • 14 August - The COVID-19 death toll in Sri Lanka surpassed 6000 with 161 record number of deaths.[188] On 13th, more 160 deaths were recorded.[189] The trend gradually increased, where 167 deaths were recorded on 15th,[190] then 171 deaths on 16th August.[191]
  • 16 August - Sri Lanka international cricketer, Kusal Perera tested COVID-19 positive and isolated for ten days.[192]
  • 17 August - Three new mutations of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 virus (SA222V, SA701S and SA1078S spike mutations) have been identified in Sri Lanka.[193] In the meantime, Twelve staff members of the Sri Lanka Parliament also tested positive including Jaffna District MP and Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam.[194][195]

    • The body of a female with hands and feet tied has been recovered from a travelling bag abandoned in a garbage dump Mabima, Sapugaskanda.[248][249] On the next day, the remains are suspected to be that of a 44-year-old woman Mohamed Mumtaz, who was residing in Maligawatta flats.[250] On 6th November, police have arrested a married couple aged 36 years, after they confessed to killing the woman.[251][252]

  • 3 December
    • Sri Lanka has confirmed its first case of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant inside a 25-year-old female from Marawila who returned from Nigeria on November 24.[278]
    • A mob took place on Wazirabad Road in Sialkot, where reportedly the workers of private factories attacked, and tortured Priyantha Kumara Diyawadana, the Sri Lankan export manager of Rajko industries and burnt his body after killing him.[279] According to the workers, he was murdered for allegedly tearing down a religious poster of the ultra-radical Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in which Quranic verses were inscribed.[280] A total 131 suspects, including 26 main ones were arrested over lynching in the followings days.[281][282] His severely cut and burnt corpse remains were sealed and brought to Sri Lanka on 6 December.[283][284][285][286]
