Background[]
In August 2018, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, was announced as the site for the eighth College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship.[3]

The game serves as a rematch of the 2021 SEC Championship Game, played a month prior. Alabama has previously appeared in five CFP championship games, winning three times, including a win over Georgia in the Bulldogs' only prior appearance in a CFP championship game, the January 2018 edition.
Alabama Crimson Tide[]
Alabama entered the National Championship game with a 13–1 record, followed by a win over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, and a win over Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl CFP semifinal.
Georgia Bulldogs[]
Georgia entered the game with a record of 13–1 with a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Georgia then received their bid to Orange Bowl with the release of final CFP rankings. They defeated Michigan in the Orange Bowl CFP semifinal.
