Background[]

On 23 May 2018, the IIHF announced Novosibirsk, Russia as the host city of the 2023 World Juniors.[1] Novosibirsk will host Group A matches, while the city of Omsk will host Group B matches; new arenas are being built in both cities for the tournament, including a rebuilt Arena Omsk.[2][3]

In February 2022, in condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called for Russia to be stripped of hosting rights to all international sporting events.[4] Russia's hosting of the World Juniors and 2023 IIHF World Championship will be discussed in a meeting of the IIHF on 28 February 2022.[5]
