Aai Kuthe Kay Karte! (transl. What Does a Mother Do!) is an Indian Marathi language drama which airs on Star Pravah.[3] It is based on the Bengali series Sreemoyee on Star Jalsha. The show premiered on 23 December 2019 and stars Madhurani Gokhale Prabhulkar in titular role of Arundhati.[4][5] It is also digitally available on Star Media's OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. The show is produced by Rajan Shahi's Director's Kut Productions.[6]

Plot[]

A middle-aged housewife, Arundhati, has dedicated her life to her husband and children. Realising that her efforts are in vain, as nobody recognises or appreciates her work and sacrifice as a housewife, she sets out instead to carve out her own identity. Her husband, Anirudh have an affair with his colleague, Sanjana. Arundhati wins the "Best Mother" title at her daughter, Isha's school and is offered a job. She accepts the job but is unable to perform it well due to family obligations.

Arundhati's elder son, Abhishek falls in love with Ankita. Ankita's mother, Revati refuses to accept their relationship due to the education status of Arundhati. Seeing Abhishek is frustrated, Arundhati talks with Revati who later agrees to the engagement ceremony. Meanwhile, Sanjana and Anirudh continue their relationship. Yash bumps into a girl, Gauri and falls in love with her. Gauri is Sanjana's niece from the USA. Abhishek and Ankita get engaged without Arundhati's presence.

Arundhati's friend Devika, explains her that her family is taking her for granted. The family plans a remarriage of Arundhati and Anirudh, to mark their 25th anniversary. Learning this, Sanjana also decides to marry Anirudh on his wedding day with Arundhati. Sanjana's plan goes in vain. In anger, She comes to tell Arundhati the truth about her and Anirudh's affair on their wedding day. However, Anirudh stops her and expresses his love towards her in his bedroom and Arundhati sees. Arundhati breaks down and decides to teach Anirudh the lesson of his betrayal.

Arundhati decides to start singing again and also learns all the things that she remained to learn. She changes her attitude towards Anirudh and questions him about everything. Soon, Anirudh and Sanjana's relationship is exposed to Deshmukh family, while Anirudh proposes Sanjana on her birthday. After seeing this, Kanchan and Appa slap Anirudh and blame him while Anirudh blames Arundhati for this situation.

Later, Isha gets kidnapped by a gang, but Sanjana's husband, Shekhar rescues her. After so much drama Anirudh decides to leave the house and goes to Sanjana's home which he found he was not comfortable at. As Diwali was arriving, everyone was preparing for that on the day of Laxmi Pujan, Anirudh tells Sanjana that his family will not do Laxmi Pujan without him. Appa tells Arundhati that they will do Laxmi Pujan, and after hearing this he gets angry and decides to divorce her. Anirudh reaches Sanjana's home and gets extremely angry when he sees Shekhar and Sanjana together with Nikhil. On the day of Bhaidooj, Kanchan's brother Tatya arrives and the family tries to hide Anirudh's secret-so they invite him home. After coming home, Anirudh decides to teach Arundhati a lesson and Tatya tells him to do all the household chores. On the day of Padwa, Arundhati is forced to do the ritual with Anirudh to manage the facade of the happy couple in front of Tatya. But Arundhati failed to do so and hence reveal all to Tatya, surprisingly Tatya supports Arundhati and rebukes Kanchan for being so much blind in their son's love.

Development[]

Rajan Shahi, who produces the series, decided to remake it in Hindi as Anupamaa for StarPlus stating, "This interesting concept around a mother's journey has been so inspirational that Star wants to bring it in Hindi too."[8][9]

The production and broadcasting of the series was halted in late March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. After more than 3 months, the filming resumed in late June 2020 and the broadcast resumed on 13 July 2020.[10][11] On 13 April 2021, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew due to increased Covid cases, while the production halted from 14 April 2021 in Mumbai.[12] Hence, the production location was soon shifted temporarily to Silvassa.[13]

Casting[]

Madhurani Gokhale-Prabhulkar is cast as the lead role. Milind Gawali, Gauri Kulkarni, Deepali Pansare, Rupali Bhosale, Mayur Khandage, Kishore Mahabole, Archana Patkar, Poonam Chandokar, Apurva Gore, Seema Ghogale, Abhishek Deshmukh, Niranjan Kulkarni, Ashish Kulkarni and Radha Kulkarni were also cast.[14] It was post COVID-19 pandemic lockdown when production resumed in June 2020. Deepali Pansare quit the series because of the pandemic and was replaced by Rupali Bhosale. In November 2021, Omkar Govardhan entered the show as the new main lead Ashutosh Kelkar.[15]
