Kudumbavilakku (transl. Light of the family) is an Indian Malayalam-language television soap opera drama.^[1] The show premiered on Asianet channel and has streamed on Disney+Hotstar since 27 January 2020. Meera Vasudevan portrays the lead role in the series, returning to television after thirteen years.^[2][3][4]

The series is produced by Chitra Shenoy under Good Company Productions, is an official remake of Bengali TV series Sreemoyee which depicts the story of a hardworking housewife Sumithra (played by Meera Vasudevan), who is not acknowledged or appreciated for her work. Then she decides to rediscover herself and prove her worth.

Plot[]

The show revolves around a Malayalee homemaker, Sumithra Menon and her family. Sumithra, a devoted housewife, mother and daughter-in-law, is family-oriented and self-sacrificing. Sumitra is married to Siddharth Menon and has three children; Anirudh Menon, a doctor, Pratheesh Menon, an aspiring musician, and Sheetal Menon, a school student. They live with Siddharth's parents, Shivadas and Saraswati. Except for Shivadas, Pratheesh, Sreekumar and their servant Mallika, no one cares for Sumitra's happiness or feelings.

Siddharth distances himself from Sumitra thinking he deserved a more educated, good-looking and beautiful wife. Siddharth becomes attracted to Vedhika, his colleague who has a son named Neerav. She soon becomes like a member of family. Anirudh and Sheetal find a perfect mother-figure in Vedhika and compare her to Sumitra whom they claim is old-fashioned. Soon Siddharth and Vedhika fall in love and both reciprocate their feelings while, Vedhika remains guilty of loving a married man. Soon, Vedhika craves for Siddharth as her husband.

Siddharth and Vedhika decide to celebrate her birthday in Kanyakumari without their families' knowledge. Sumitra's NRI friend, Neelina comes from USA and their friend's group to visit Kanyakumari only to find Siddharth's cheating. Heartbroken, Sumitra cuts all ties with Siddharth. Anirudh's marriage is fixed with a fellow doctor Ananya, who is very arrogant and stubborn. Siddharth and Anirudh begin to give more importance to Vedhika than Sumitra. Ananya soon realizes her mother-in-law and becomes nicer.

Pratheesh falls in love with a girl named Sanjana. Sumitra decides to ask her father, Ramakrishnan, consent for his daughter's marriage with Pratheesh but is left humiliated. Soon Sanjana marries an America-based NRI named Manish.

Soon Siddharth and Vedhika's relationship is exposed to the family. Siddharth and Sheetal move to Vedhika's house. Sheetal is mistreated by Vedhika and in remorse she attempts suicide but is saved by Siddharth. Sumitra claims Sheetal with the help of a policeman but she returns to Vedhika. Soon Saraswati also moves from Sreenilayam (which has been registered in Sumitra's name by Shivadas) to Vedhika's house but returns to Sreenilayam after facing humiliation.

Sumitra and Siddharth get divorced. Vedhika claims divorce from Sampath, but Sampath demands Neerav's custody for the divorce. Vedhika sadly parts with Neerav. She forces Siddharth to take a large loan for wedding shopping and arrangements. Meanwhile, Sumitra's colleague, Rohit Gopal enters the show along with his daughter, Pooja. Pooja and Sheetal become friends and Shivadas brings Pooja to Sreenilayam. Vedhika and Siddharth get married but bad omens follow them. Shivadas turns them away when they return home.

Soon Siddharth and Vedhika rents the house opposite to Sreenilayam. Vedhika finds about Jithin who is a drug dealer and drug addict himself whom in turn is love with Sheetal. Vedhika decides to make Sheetal marry Jithin. Before the ring exchange ceremony happens, the police arrest Jithin. Vedhika tries to humiliate Sumitra by organizing Anirudh and Ananya's wedding anniversary function in her house but everyone the party hosted by Sumitra instead. Pratheesh learns that Sanjana is now a widow as her husband Manish died in a car accident. Sumitra decides to make Sanjana marry Pratheesh before she marries an older man named Bhadran. With the help of police, they stage a drama and the marriage proceeds.

Vedhika vows to destroy Sumitra's Onam happiness by joining hands with Ramakrishnan to kidnap Sanjana and Sheetal so that the Onam function does not happen. Vedhika feels elated when both of them didn't turn up the right time and criticizes Sumitra but things take a turn when Sanjana and Sheetal return and the Onam festival happens.

Vedhika and Siddarth experience a financial crisis. Vedhika vents her anger on Sumitra by turning Preetha, an employee of Sumitra's boutique, against Sumitra and having her file a false complaint against Sumitra for attempted molestation. But Rohit, Sreekumar and Pratheesh find the truth and Sumitra is bailed off while Vedhika is arrested. Siddharth abandons Vedhika forever and states that he doesn't want to live with her.

Vedhika, who was staying in a hotel room, then shifts to her mother's home and wants to return to Siddharth's house. She repeatedly tries to stay in his house, but fails. However Vedhika announces her pregnancy which makes Siddharth to accept Vedhika back into his home, but Sampath reveals that Vedhika can't have babies anymore, shocking Siddharth and his family and leaves them insulted. Siddharth tells Vedhika that he doesn't want her in his life anymore.

Dr. Indraja, who works at Ananya and Anirudh's hospital and is a divorcée, wants a relationship with Anirudh and unsuccessfully tries to separate Ananya and Anirudh. However, Indraja blackmails Anirudh by showing photos of him and Indraja.

Vedhika tries to get back to Siddharth by hitting her head with a vase, and blaming Sumitra for the same. Vedhika gets a case registered against Sumitra, but Siddharth tells her that he will accept her back only if she withdraws the case. She withdraws it, but plans to plot further against Sumitra.

On Sumithra's birthday, Anirudh gets threatened by Dr. Indraja who asks him to come with her for a trip. Being tired of the harassment he has to face, Anirudh decides to commit suicide before which, he asks for forgiveness from Sumithra, Pratheesh and all the other family members for hurting and insulting them. Anirudh later tries to commit suicide, but is saved by Pratheesh and Ananya. Anirudh talks about the harassment he had to face from Dr. Indraja, to Ananya and Pratheesh, who are shocked to learn about Indraja's real attitude. Sumithra refuses to start the birthday function without Anirudh's presence but they soon start the party when Anirudh, Pratheesh and Ananya return home.

Sumithra learns about Anirudh's problems from Ananya and Pratheesh and that Indraja was behind all this. Furious, Sumithra goes to Indraja's house and warns her to stay away from Anirudh's life. However, Indraja threatens that she will file a complaint using photos of Anirudh and Indraja as evidences but Sumithra snatches Indraja's phone and gives it to Anirudh and Ananya to keep it safe. Anirudh finally understands his mother's great love for him. Realizing his mistakes, Anirudh asks forgiveness and decides to always stand with Sumithra. Indraja decides to file a case against Sumithra for attacking her and forcefully gaining ownership of Indraja's phone.
